Of course they are allowed to lie to you. That's their job.

You however are not allowed to lie. That is illegal.

I feel like I just watched a small portion of something much longer and potentially more useful.

I was pulled over or a burned out tail light and the cop did exactly this to me. I was returning from snowboarding, had long hair and admittedly looked a bit like a pothead but at the time had never actually smoked. He profiled me, threatened me with a K9 unit if I didn't fess up and thankfully since I knew I was clean I had the guts to tell him off. Yet it scares me to know that I may have caved if I had anything on me.
