So he's got the guitar capoed way up on the 7th fret, I don't get how he can be strumming open chords, and having it sound that good. Anyone?

dag, it looks like he tuned it down to an open D minor (or maybe just a Dm11), then capoed at the 7th for an open A minor (or Am11). It may sound better than what you'd expect for capoing at the 7th fret because 1) he's tuned down a full tone and 2) he's playing almost exclusively open strings so it really rings.

He's also reduced the original 3 chord riff (Am-G-F-G-Am) to just an A minor drone on the guitar with little fills on the other instruments.
