As for using faggot. I'm torn on it. I'm not sure the benefits of having it as part of my vocabulary actually outweigh the chance I offend or hurt somebody. You might say its their fault they are offended, but if you've spent a fair amount of your life having the word faggot thrown at you with hateful intent then I'd say its their right to be offended whether you really intend to offend them or not. After all the word does reference the burning of homosexuals alive.

I'm also torn on whether we should really use words to such an extent that they lose all meaning. Faggot is a pretty horrid word and you might say its a good thing for its meaning to be diluted, but perhaps we should preserve its power, no matter how distasteful, as a reminder if nothing else of the history of hate directed at homosexuality. I have much the same opinion of the word nigger.

Um... that is a quote from the clip I posted. A quote written by Louis CK. I recognize that not every gay man in America is beaten. I'm sure Louis recognizes that too. Sometimes hyperbole is used for effect, and most sensible people realize its not meant to be taken literally.

However I think I would be a lot more concerned if say this kid was beaten to death...I'd want people to hang. Rather than he was picked on to the point where he felt he needed to end it all. Where were the parents in that scenario?

I never said anything about swearing in general, though that is closely related. I'm saying that how you use words reveals things about yourself, and you will be judged accordingly. As others have mentioned, context is essential. Of course I can't claim to have seen everything they have ever said, but I will bet dollars to donuts that Dan Savage and Stephen Fry have never uttered the word "faggot" as an intentional slur against another person. They would use it tongue in cheek, or as satire targeted at people who use it as a slur. And if Louis CK uses it as a slur, then yes, my opinion of him will drop several points. But I would have to see it in context. As for other types of swearing, if you swear occasionally to emphasize a point, it can be very effective. But if you're dropping the f-bomb every other word, it ceases to become a bomb and starts to become a sign that you're an idiot.

But I think you know what I'm saying and are intentionally being argumentative. So this is my final statement on the subject: Human beings are constantly judging each other. It's in our nature. One of the things that we judge is the maturity level of a person's discourse. The use of slurs based on gender, ethnicity, and sexual preference is rapidly becoming the realm of ignorant, backward, irrelevant people. Are there exceptions? Probably. Should you count on people making an exception for you? Not if you're smart. You can argue that there are powerful and important people who still use these kinds of slurs, but most people will not think of those exceptions when they hear you talk. They will be thinking instead of the 12 year old moron anonymously shouting bile into his xbox, or these horrible children celebrating the death of an innocent boy. It is your choice how you wish to present yourself to the world, so don't try to convince me that you should be allowed to spew hatred without repercussions. That won't get you anywhere.

What a fucking fantastic thing to comment on a video about a kid being bullied into suicide.

This tears my heart out. I was no monster, but I did my share of ignorant bullying in high school. I'm in my 30's now and I have contacted every one of them via peer networks and apologized for my ignorance; however, I learned that one girl that me and some friends picked on has killed herself after she caught her husband cheating on her. In a strange twist of fate, the woman I've been married to for 17 years now is a good friend with this girl's sister and her parents. I was able to apologize to her parents. They assured me that I had nothing to do with her suicide, but I don't care. I certainly didn't help her situation. I live with guilt every day of my life, and I am so sorry for being so wrong back then. I became a psychiatric tech in the 90's and I work with people who suffer from depression and other psychiatric disorders everyday when I go to work. I hope to help heal as many people as possible after causing those few people so much hurt.
