ATHEIST! Do you believe in...?

demon_ixsays...

I honestly don't get why Atheism is so obscene to some people.

I would think the "Without religion you would have no sense of morality or right and wrong" argument is refuted all the time by Priest child molesters and christians who commit murder...

If we look at the unlimited universe theory, then all those things he mentioned should exist. Actually, if there are infinitive universes, some stuff which people think of as impossible is very possible and probably does exist at some point...but it's just a theory.

>> It is possible not to believe in all of those things, including יהוה, and yet still feel open and attuned to a universal consciousness. Atheism is a belief too.

The atheism that's represented by modern science is based on the empirical philosophy that only phenomena that can be reliably detected warrant "belief."

Atheism is a "belief" in the same sense that evolution is a "theory;" it's a false symmetry to imply that atheism and evolution are on the same level of unreliability as the random supernatural musings ("beliefs" and "theories") that oppose them.

Supernaturalists who believe in vague claims of the "sense of the sacred" seem to either believe consciousness is a spiritual phenomenon that 'can't be explained rationally' (good argument) or that it's some mystery of advanced physics. Claims of the latter sort don't seem to have a very good track record: "Quantum gods don't deserve your faith," New Scientist, April 2009.

Atheism is a belief too.

Atheism is a belief in much the same way that doubting a tiger is going to leap out of your toilet and devour your head is a belief. That doesn't mean that it can't possibly be true, it just means there is no evidence supporting it (at least none concerning my toilet).

Technically you could say anything is just a belief. It's just a belief that air is more than empty space. It's just a belief that you won't fall through solid ground.

The difference is testability. Scientific statements can be tested, but god(s) cannot. Some people choose not to actively believe in things that cannot be tested. Atheism is not a belief that no god(s) exist, it is an observation that no testable evidence shows that they exist.
