Don't forget radiation-hardening and extreme temperature operation. It costs much more to make electronics function as intended outside 0-70C and in the presence of ionizing radiation.

Doc_M, you should check out the NASA TV channel if you haven't. They're pretty proactive at letting the public know what's going on.

Use your head to increase the range of your car remote

meow says...

I have tested this on a single car in multiple locations on numerous occasions and have found that head contact, or indeed any skin or near skin contact (top of head, arm, body, etc) increases the range 20-50%. This does not seem to be affected by orientation of the remote, with the exception that a specific end of the remote must be near the body. Getting good line of sight is important, and blocking the remote with my hand or body seemed reduce the range considerably.

The reflector hypothesis is an interesting one, rich_magnet. The body being composed heavily of water would help to create an impedance mismatch which would reflect some frequencies. If so, I would think the chest area would be the largest, most effective reflector. In my experience, if the remote is more than a quarter-inch away from the body, it will not noticeably affect the range.

iSaw USB Chainsaw. USB Chainsaw? USB CHAINSAW!!!!!!

meow says...

I am floored by the jaw-dropping power of a 5W (0.007 hp) chainsaw. The USB 2.0 specification limits a device's current consumption to 1A-1.5A. It would make more sense to charge a battery in the saw over USB rather than rely on it for continuous operational power. If USB is truely needed, transferring some information to the computer like the current speed, torque, even power consumption of the saw would be a more adequate use of the communications interface. This is way goofy, though. Cheers!

1 Million lbs. of Force Exerted on Concrete Pylon

I was thinking the same thing. They must have a lot of confidence in their experience of how concrete shatters under force. I would have been behind an inch or two of plexiglass.

It looks like the audience is behind some plexiglass (see vertical strip of wood below tiny American flag). But yes, the black shirt / green hat guy does seem to be close and without protection.

I assume from the description that the creator did not have direct control over motor speeds, only indirect "move to x,y,z" control. Impressive. Must be an unholy cacophony when real work is getting done.

The Pirate Bay (2007)

Copyright in the U.S. allows for "Fair use" as defined by several loose definitions. Nothing can be said to be illegal or legal absolutely unless ruled in court because the definitions do not create a black-and-white distinctions. This is why the RIAA can claim that backing up CDs is not legal, while that may not actually hold up in a court of law.

There is another factor to consider when making copies of things - the DMCA. The DMCA criminalizes circumvention of access control devices for copyrighted works (such as DRM). This is why backing up a DVD with copyrighted information on it, such as the latest Bond movie, is illegal (DVDs are technically encrypted, while most CDs are not). Even having the software to do such a thing is illegal - because of the DMCA. You can thank the Associations of America for laws like this.

Nerdgasm: PLASMA Loudspeaker!

If the dielectric breakdown voltage of air is 3kV/mm and the spacing between the wires is about 65mm (~2.7in), then the voltage between the wires would have to exceed 200kV before the air would ionize and allow current to flow. This would be possible with a transformer with an extremely high turns ratio at the expense of current driving ability. The oscilloscope seems to show a pulse-width modulated waveform with a low duty cycle.

Nice work with all the breadboarding! I wonder if they ran into problems with the high voltage wires arcing to something unexpected.
