The fact is that Reagan sold them all on this idea of supply side economics. That if you lower taxes on the rich, they will invest that money in business, which in turn creates jobs. There is a certain logic to this, but the truth off the matter is that supply don't mean shit if you don't have demand. No business is going to hire more widget makers if no one is buying widgets. Demand comes from the bottom. People with less money spend a larger proportion of it.

I've actually seen worse too, at an internship I worked ages ago. Those were ancient boxes (even at that time) used in industrial settings. Mind you I can see how those accumulated so much dust, they were so old they really didn't have fans, (just heat sinks, if that), or they were terminals.

In TED's defense, the talk isn't exactly ground breaking. He's saying things we've all heard before, and isn't really adding anything new to the conversation. That said it is a 3 minute talk, you can't really go into any kind of depth in that time frame.

In Hanauer's defense, the partisan argument is BS and is rather telling. In this political climate, talking about income inequality in the US in any way that suggests the rich should pay more or doesn't outright enshrine the wealthy is automatically labeled left-wing communist propaganda trying to incite class warfare. So what else was he supposed to say?

I don't entirely disagree with what Maher is saying here, but I think he was missing part of the point Jon Stewart was trying to make. True, the extremists on the right are much worse than the ones on the left, but there are extremists on both sides. The point is that these extremists are feeding each other. There is no doubt that during the Bush era, the right has refined FUD down to an art, but now the left is starting to try and play the same game, which just makes things worse. It's distracting the public, and hindering progress, because it's always easier to bash the other guys argument than to come up with a better alternative.

@ponceleon, I think Randi was speaking mainly of professional psychics, and perhaps other woo purveyors. If you listen to the end of the speech, he does mention how a great many amateurs have applied for the prize. Though I think the million dollar prize offer has finally been retired, or is about to be anyway.

I honestly don't see what the issue is here. Regardless of what you may think of his views, he didn't do anything wrong. He didn't deny the couple anything, but simply refused to do something he didn't feel comfortable doing. Now being an elected official, I'd question his prospects the next time around though. I know I wouldn't vote for him, now that being said I think the dissemination of this information surrounding this incident is important, but it seems some are taking it too seriously without knowing all the facts.
