chris hedges on secular and religious fundamentalism

jbaber says...

Welcome to our world. Christian's outside of the recent American fundamentalist fad have to be tarred with the same brush as them. We're not allowed to say

"Christians aren't like that. Christians are like x, y, and z."

because it's not true. Nope, we've got to swallow it. All we can say is "Hey, we're not all like that." which is as wimpy as it sounds.

If atheists want to be honest, that's all they can say, too.

>> ^A10anis:

Let's be clear, atheists have NO agenda. Atheists would prefer to be quiet on the subject....

Ach, I always come to these debates too late. The killer feature of my dream bulletin board is the ability of the initial poster to restrict posts to 140 characters (excluding links so the would count as 3 characters).

shinyblurry: rock musicians are all kinds of nuts -- being into 'majick' nonsense is pretty innocent as far as the rock world goes.

I've never quite understood why fundamentalists look for obscure evil (satanic cults, subliminal messages, democrats, etc.) when there's plenty of obvious evil (slavery, child molestation, dire poverty etc.) in the world. Maybe because it's cheaper and more pleasant to fight imaginary evil on youtube than to actually show up at a soup kitchen?

Saab owners are also severely underrepresented in prison populations.

I try to resist commenting on these things, but it is important to remember that atheists are rare in prison because they're richer and more educated, not because a lack of faith makes you more honest (or faith makes you more criminal).

I lost it at the prison population...all too true.

Why's that? I didn't get that bit

Atheists are statistically underrepresented in prison.

Dude love of money, not money itself. i.e. avarice. Jesus' anger at the money-changers was not because he wished they were bartering...

If there is one thing the bible got right it's this: the love of money is the root of all evil.

Possibly the one and only thing Ayn Rand actually got right...her refutation of this old saw is amazing. An eleven page (IIRC) monologue by Francisco refuting the claim is actually readable, understandable, and quite logical. Money is a symbol and a tool, and quite a powerful tool at that. It expands our capability far beyond anything that could have been accomplished when limited to a barter economy.
The part she failed to grasp (or refused to admit, I'm not sure) is that unrestrained greed is -not- a virtue. Once you throw away ethical behavior in the pursuit of unbridled acquisition...once you start treating people as tools to be used rather than human beings...once you begin to look at people as sheep to be fleeced rather than trading partners to make mutually profitable deals with...you -are- evil.
