Saudi woman showing her home

At some point, though, GoogTube, political correctness and respecting others' cultures is just no longer relevant. The extent of inequality between the sexes shown in this very clip cannot be justified by recognizing that it is out of a different context; I can't conscience things like female circumcision or the restriction of human life to this extent on the basis of cultural difference. Just because something is a part of a culture different from ours doesn't mean it can't be wrong or unjust or sickening.

I don't find zoos immoral, but I find this depressing because it's like teasing them... I think zoos should ideally display animals as close to as they would be in their natural habitats as possible, like at the San Diego zoo, near to where I live. Shouting out at them and essentially having them perform and do tricks for snacks just seems a little off to me, though I can't outrightly call it "immoral."

I'm sure it's mostly harmless, but it smacks of something just... sad to me. They seem a little crowded too, though some animals like to be crowded in so I can't say for sure if that's something wrong.

I think my posture'd be a little awkward if I were in a room hardly larger than two closets put together. Also: Kerry can't help being tall.

20/20 Stupid in America

I know it sounds conspiracy theory-ish, but I really think a lot of the defects in our education system do have to do with culture, like p0tat03 commented, and that the anti-intellectualism prevalent in American culture is perpetuated by those in power to keep Americans ignorant and easily brain-washed.

Think of all the R & B music videos you've ever seen -- they glorify above everything else opulance (beautiful women, nice cars, etc.) and money, even violence. All these music labels are owned by rich middle-aged white men keeping our poorest worshipping counterproductive ideals (being tough and inner-city is cool, while trying to dig yourself out of poverty and speaking "white" if you're black is betraying your race; one is encouraged to spend, spend, spend on lavish status symbols, like diamonds and fancy cars) while discouraging any sort of real attempt out of poverty. Politicians forever push an image of being just "one of the guys," and being uneducated isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you're not some blue-blooded snob. George Bush is a good example of this--he went Ivy League but is forever touting his Texan roots.

I'm not saying the public schools are kept lacking in any sort of conscious way at the lower levels, but I do think the government would like Americans to be as impressionable as possible, and this reflects in our mass media and public culture, which in turn encourages the apathy and incompetence we see in schools and among students.

Why you shouldn't throw paper clips at your coworkers:

fake because people would not sit around calmly while one man clobbered another, no matter how much he deserved it. They don't even really look that surprised. If this were real, I think the guy would probably have walked/ran around the table.

Westboro Cult Child Abuse

Whoa, geez, "Theists have nothing in common with human beings?" And we're railing against the hate-speech of this woman? I don't agree with her either, and it's a terrible shame what she's doing to her children, but I think you just proved you have a lot in common with a theist like her.

Also, saying you don't wish anyone harm and then going on to say that you wish them excrutiating pain sounds a little like the fundamentalist creed to love thy neighbor except those they don't (like anyone homosexual).

Not to get up on a soap box or anything, but don't let self-righteousness against an evil turn you into that evil. Also, one radical doesn't represent the entire belief system--would you want other people to judge you by the crazies on your end of things?
