Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Student Debt

Sycraft says...

There is something to that. In terms of tuition costs at state universities, the largest part of the increase is due to cuts in state aid. However another part of the increase is universities have been getting nicer facilities. Like dorms are no longer a bunch of small concrete rooms that you keep your stuff in, they've gotten quite apartment like. Ok fair enough, but that all costs. The reason it is happening is demand from students.

Not saying it is the overall cause of student debt, but many students in the 1st world have 1st world causes. That starbucks coffee on the run that costs 4.50, that beer run, that everything...yeah, everyone thinks college is a place to screw until your dick or vagina fall off, but it is not. It is a place to learn. And if you were not taught how to be frugal, pay please. But then I got the GI bill for abysmal working conditions and pay so who am I to say it...

You Probably Don't Need to Be on that Gluten-free Diet

Sycraft says...

Because restricting your diet unnecessarily is silly, and can make eating healthy a more difficult proposition. For most people without food allergies or sensitivities, it does not make sense to restrict something like gluten for no reason. Rather it is better to choose what you eat based off of what is healthy, provides the nutrients you need, and doesn't have an excessive amount of calories.

The police officers could be heard yelling stop resisting ;)

Sycraft says...

No I believe his point was that:

1) This happened a long time ago. This really isn't relevant today, it is 5 year old news.

2) All the cops involved got punished. Maybe not as much as you or I would like, but they all got fired for this.

It gets a little silly to try and drudge up old stuff for no particular reason.

that gives them the right to beat up on a guy who is already either unconscious or severely injured and no longer a threat?

The police are supposed to be above petty revenge

They are supposed to be the good guys, not judge jury and executioner. I dunno about you, but I don't want to live in a society with a bunch of Judge Dredd wannabes.

"Aint that some bullshit"

Sycraft says...

If it had an alarm system, dad wouldn't need to lock the door. Said alarm system would only enable when central locking was engaged, which the driver would do.

Car alarms don't engage or disengage when a random door is locked or unlocked. they would not be useful were that they case. They are armed only when they get a command from the central locking system. That same command will also lock all doors.

If your car doesn't have central locking, it doesn't have an alarm. Now you can, of course, install an aftermarket alarm that use uses a code or fob to arm. In that case, the arming is completely separate from the locks, and you can leave the doors unlocked and it will not affect its operation. Still on the driver to arm it.

So no, there is no point at whining at your passengers to lock the doors if you have a car with an open top. Either you arm the alarm with the key or fob, which will handle locking, or you don't have that, in which case it doesn't matter because someone can just hop in.

Doors locked enables alarm system. Has sensor for any movement inside the car (if someone jumps in, without unlocking / opening the door)...and goes off.

Also sets the immobiliser to prevent someone from jump starting it.

Lock the door....dad...

Yazidi survivors rescued by helicopter

Sycraft says...

They don't catch shells because it is just something else to deal with. Military operations cause a lot of waste and contamination (the bullets are lead as an example). It would be superfluous to worry about the casings and just take up more space and crew time.

The reason they take reporters is because it helps the public see and support what is going on. Having public support behind these sort of things is important. Also most western nations have pretty strong freedom of the press rules.

Yes, he took up some space, but it isn't like that is the only helicopter they sent. This isn't a case of "one chopper and then the rest of you are screwed." They are sending more flights. That same chopper probably went back, after refueling and rearming, for that matter.

Whenever I see videos where they're shooting from a helicopter, I wonder why they don't catch their empties. That's a lot of hot brass they're dropping all over, wasting shells and contaminating whatever's below them. Why?
I agree, this reporter both has balls of steel and is obnoxious, but my thought was he could have simply given one of the military a go-pro instead of going with them, and 3 more children (or 2 thin adults) could have been saved.

40 Stars Before They Were Stars Auditioning

Sycraft says...

No kidding. The audition is notable because he nailed the American accent so well that the director forgot/didn't realize that it was Hugh Laurie, but he was quite well known before that. In fact he was on location filming a movie, and he apologises as that being the reason for his haggard appearance. Another happy coincidence, as they decided such a look was great for House.

And Hugh Laurie before House. He'd become a star about 30 before.

She Failed Science

Sycraft says...

Agreed. While this is an effective demonstration of conservation of momentum, it is also dangerous. You need to make sure to do things safely. That is all on the professor as they are supposedly the expert and are in charge.

Speaking Out On Street Harassment

Sycraft says...

bareboards has the right of it: Victims speaking up is the most important thing when it comes to, well, just about anything. Harassment, abuse, etc. The idea that if we just tell people that it is bad enough they will change their behaviour is silly. No, they won't. The people who do this are assholes that don't care about others. Hence the answer is for victims to speak up, call these people out, cast them in to the public light.

That is the only way these kinds of things will stop. You can't hope that society will just change.

Britney Spears - Alien (NO AUTOTUNE)

Sycraft says...

The thing is, if you are a good musician, it is hard to be out of tune. It will actually bother you. Being in tune is just something you do, you just hear it, feel it, all the time.
