How It's Made - McDonald's Fries

Sycraft says...

Why? There's no reason to do something overly complex when something simple works. I think some people think that companies do random "evil" shit just for kicks. It is all about efficiency and money. Potatoes are cheap as hell, and processing them like this is really efficient. There would be no reason to go and do something overly complex and use other products. It is really easy to cut a potato in to fry shape.

If you want to see it happen, go to a In n' Out. There they take the potatoes and stick them in a little hand press device and when they push down, a pile of uncooked fries comes out the other end. Same concept as the water knife, just not a big assembly line process.

When you are talking cheap food preparation they keep it as simple as possible because the keeps it cheap. If anything is added, there's a reason like the Dextrose (which is just a sugar).

I've always wondered this, and imagined a pit of mash that was just formed into fry-shapes.

Am I overly cynical that I still don't believe this? Here's video footage of the process, but my distrusting, questioning mind still adds "supposedly" to its assessment of everything I see here.

Four Months as a Private Prison Guard -- Part One

Sycraft says...

No probably not. It is very rare for jobs to have NDAs other than for very specific things. If a job tried for a complete NDA like "You can't talk about anything at all you do or see ever," it would likely get quashed by a court.

How our government manages the U.S. debt and its limit

Sycraft says...

Particularly since the debt limit is set by the government on the government. It isn't as though it is even one part of the government asking another for a limit increase, it is all internal to congress. They set the budget, they set the taxes, and they set the debt limit. It is 100% up to them what they want to do and they could simply not have a debt limit, as many other countries do.

Here's a much better video explaining it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIbkoop4AYE

Brand Name vs. Generic

Sycraft says...

The generic food thing is rather silly since often as not there is more than one brand of food and they taste different. At most one of those brands is being used as the store brand which means the rest will taste different. Sometimes it is totally different as well, the store may contract a major company to make it, but still have their own formula.

Basically store-brand food is just another brand and should be treated as such. It can be very tasty, I'm personally a big fan of Safeway's store brand olive oil, but acting like store brand food is the same as brand name is the same as acting like Coke and Pepsi taste the same. No, it's different stuff, buy the stuff you like the best.

Bad/Smooth Criminal Piano Mash-up With Exceptional Skill

Sycraft says...

While the camera wouldn't get that kind of sound recording, you can easily record a piano like that with close micing. You stick the microphones inside the lid, down near the strings. It gives a very wide, expansive, soundstage. Here is an example of one kind of setup like that.

However it has a downside: It picks up more of the piano's noise, in particular hammer and pedal noise, as well as key noise. Those are the noises you hear, particularly when he starts working the pedals hard.

In terms of his key movements being sync'd to the music, they look sync'd to me. That kind of thing isn't that useful for evaluation because there are too many variables that can affect it:

1) The sync of your system. Your sound system and monitor have a delay to them. Depending on the difference in the delays, things can be a bit out of sync, perhaps noticeably so. Unless you have your system calibrated for it, which isn't likely on a computer.

2) Problems in the A/V sync in production. Something like this would probably be recorded with two devices: A hand held camera, and a dedicated recorder. The audio from the recorder would then need to be sync'd manually with the video. Depending on how accurate that is done, there can be some desync.

3) Sync issues in the video. I'm sure you've seen plenty of videos online with sync issues, various problems in encoding and streaming can cause them.

Not saying that this is real for sure, I don't know, just that I don't see or hear anything inconsistent.

Baby Girl Is :) To Be Seeing Clearly With New 1st Glasses!

Sycraft says...

There are automatic refraction machines. Most optometrists have them these days and will use them before you go in for a manual refraction. They aren't as accurate as a manual refraction, and can't control for your preference, hence why manual is still done, but it quickly lets them know where to start.

Also, for people who have difficulties communicating, such as a baby, it can get you a pretty good result.

Incredibly precise archer ... in slow motion

Sycraft says...

I imagine not much, because he isn't making any outlandish claims. He is doing, by his own claim, "exhibition shooting" meaning trick shooting. He's doing some very precise skill trickshots and doing them extremely well. He's not claiming to have rediscovered some long lost art, or that his shooting is the One True Way(tm).

In particular you'll notice that he is shooting at targets thrown more or less straight up at a reasonably close distance, presumably of his choosing. Between an amazing innate ability and presumably tons of practice, he can pull off amazing shots. However he's not claiming he can do it from horseback, or that ancient archers did this shit all the time.

He claims to be a top notch exhibition shooter that can hit virtually anything you throw, and indeed he is and can.

A Response to Lars Andersen: a New Level of Archery

Sycraft says...

No it is pretty legit. She's not saying "He can't shoot like that," just that he's full of shit that everyone used to shoot like that and he's managed to rediscover the technique that was somehow lost yet available on Google.

Her points are very accurate, particularly the "what works" point. Different archers in different nations used different tactics based on what worked with their given military's tactics and available materials.

No different than modern militaries for that matter. They all do various things a little different, what works for one setup doesn't necessarily work for all.

How do you celebrate a 50 year decrease in drunk driving?

Sycraft says...

What do you mean? Do you mean they include reductions in deaths because of that? Yes. Do you mean is there an adjustment to try and offset that? No.

Automotive deaths are a raw number, so it shows how many people die in a given area. It isn't something that is adjusted, it is the actual number of people who die. That then gets broken down by the cause.

In general if you are interested in evidence of increased vehicle safety leading to less deaths you can look at the deaths per million vehicle miles traveled. Basically, as people drive more, in general deaths would go up. However better safety in cars has been doing a good job of reducing deaths, despite miles traveled increasing.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: The Lottery

Sycraft says...

Which it is for sure. The problem is that more specifically it is a tax on people who are not smart with money. Well, often those people are people who don't make much money to begin with, hence the issue. The people who like to play it the most are the ones who can least afford it, and the ones who least understand the cost.

Instant Karma

Sycraft says...

I'm pretty sure this guy was doing something before the guy was filming him. That would be why this video was happening too. Dude saw something developing and turned his camera on.

As for the guy whining about this being "American" and not deescalating: Oh get off the cultural supremacy kick. People were telling him to settle down, that the police had already been called, asking him what his problem was, etc. He then escalated the situation and they responded by immobilizing him. Not kicking the crap out of him, immobilizing him. You either have a very warped view of how people act or you feel the need to hate on America for anything, regardless of how inappropriate.
