Here's how the American diet has changed the last 52 years

SwimWithSharks says...

Now what is the average caloric expenditure for the "average American" over the same period? I bet that in addition to the average caloric consumption going up 800/day, the average caloric expenditure went down due to a lot less people working in physical jobs now compared to 50 years ago...

It seems calories-in/calories-out would be a much simpler explanation for the "obesity epidemic" compared to eating high/low fat high/low carbs etc. etc.

How to Brake

SwimWithSharks says...

I am surprised he just went right back up to high speed, many years ago while on a motorcycle on a freeway a car in front of me didn't respect the lane being closed and went through a bunch of cones which scattered all throughout the lane: this was basically a couple of seconds in front so nothing I could do but hope that 1) I would hit no cones and 2) that if I did I wouldn't fall down and be run over by the rest of the traffic. Luckily I missed all the cones but I had to stop in the emergency lane afterwards to calm down from the adrenaline...

Drawing one million dots over 90 hours in 3 minutes

SwimWithSharks says...

many many years ago I used to use points to shade technical drawings (instead of my classmates who used watercolor, I was really bad at that, so I figured something else)

After some time it was killing my fingers / wrists so all I did was simply to get a glove and basically attach an adapter for the technical pen to the index finger, so I could dot by simply moving my index finger down (just like tapping), *much* *much* more ergonomic...

Pointillism is amazing and beautiful. Though it seems to screw up peoples wrists. If that's really the case I hope artists will chose another method. You don't need to disable yourself for us.

Volkswagen stroller

SwimWithSharks says...

they should do it so it has another sensor on the back so the stroller stays in front of you (not behind) at a known distance, and it uses the sensor on the front just for obstacle avoidance

BCS Mower vs Scythe

SwimWithSharks says...

you sure about that? I used to scythe for fun when I was growing up (quite some time ago) and I don't remember having any particular difficulty cutting the grass at whatever height it was, as long as you are able to keep the scythe parallel to the ground (which is not as easy as it looks, my dad made fun of me all the time when I snagged it) you can cut it no problem as far as I can remember at least

Mordhaus said:

Thing is, with a scythe you need the grass to be high like that. It's much harder to cut a lawn with a scythe because the grass simply must be a certain height.

Which in a neighborhood like mine means you will have nice neighbors banging on your door telling you to get your grass cut because it is too high. I guess you COULD use the scythe to dissuade them, but I don't know how the local authorities would feel about that.

A Mini Cooper being made

SwimWithSharks says...

we'll see what happens once most jobs are 'efficiency-ed-out', unlike in the industrial revolution now you're not just seeing mechanization becoming faster at specific tasks, robotization is becoming more and more flexible, which means that as it goes on more and more broad categories of jobs will go by the wayside.

Just think of when in the endless quest for profit the moment it becomes more cost effective to switch to, say, self-driving delivery trucks and entirely automated fast food, how many millions of people will that put out of work? and what are they going to do?

I don't blindly subscribe to dystopian scenarios, but I also don't blindly subscribe to platitudes like "horse buggy whip factories disappeared and we were just fine", this is something we need to address as a society somehow (via basic income maybe, or some other way)

Downhill Skateboarding With Surprise Ending

SwimWithSharks says...

even if you have a spotter at the bottom starting around 2:04 and again 2:11 there are parking lots/other roads connecting to the road they are descending on, so any type of vehicle could have come in even before then. They should've had the spotter at 2:04 and stopped the video then if they wanted to do it safely.

Cool racing action (formula vee @ bathurst)

SwimWithSharks says...

when somebody talks about formula vee being basically a vw beetle engine on ancient suspensions and not much else you wouldn't think it'd look this thrilling: I'd never heard of this before driving this type of car in a videogame and found this video while looking for driving tips

I was wincing already at 4:30 or thereabouts when he puts his left finger up while holding the piece... no way I'd ever do anything like this hand-held, there is a reason why there are clamps and push-sticks...
