CNN: Guns In Japan

RedSky jokingly says...

And just imagine how crazy it would be to have a real licensing / test system.

Look what happened with car licenses, instituted those and now all cars out outlawed!

Not sure but comparing a non violent society to a violent society is not quite apples to apples.

Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal

RedSky says...

To be overly anal about it, uncanny valley concerns more the eeriness or revulsion 'peak' of a near lifelike replica. Think dead eyes in Polar Express or the plastic faces of Japan's android models.

This to me at least is beyond that trough on the uncanny valley chart, I do not sense any revulsion personally. I can of course detect it is still not real but no particular facet triggers that doppelganger reaction.

New Rule: Fee F**king

RedSky says...

Credit card company revenue comes from a number of sources but interest / fees are a large component.

My point was more, by definition continuous 30-60 days interest free periods (loans) aren't 'free' and there's cross-subsiding going on.

The business model is built on selling a highly overpriced product to consumer A, so you can sell an underpriced one to consumer B.

This is pretty far from the capitalist ideal of companies competing and continuously innovating to offer consumers the best product.

Why would we get "free" loans?
Maybe because they get something like 4% from the vendors?

New Rule: Fee F**king

@newtboy

The criticism is more of how it's designed. The only reason we get an interest fee period with credit cards is those paying fees / interest are subsidising those who aren't. Otherwise why would you essentially get free borrowed money?

Has GOT Lost Its Edge | Wisecrack (SPOILERS)

RedSky says...

I'm confused why they didn't make use of the full season episode count. The material clearly could support it and they could have easily padded out plenty of sections with more character interaction / dialogue.

That extra content using the same sets / locations would have surely been relatively cheap compared to the extra revenue it brought in.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Has A Blunt Message For Nazis

RedSky says...

Do you think there's any significance behind him waiting 2 days before actually naming Nazis? I thought that a big criticism of Obama from the right was that he wouldn't name terrorism as 'Islamic', is this different?

bobknight33 said:

Trump did condemn, unlike Arnold's dad.

Truth and facts but left out that his dad was a Nazi.

His dad decided not to beat the loud and angry voices of the Nazi with louder more reasonable voices. His dad just joined them.

Military career[edit]
Schwarzenegger had served in the Austrian Army from 1930 to 1937, achieving the rank of section commander and in 1937 he became a police officer. After enlisting in the Wehrmacht in November 1939, he was a Hauptfeldwebel (Master Sergeant) of the Feldgendarmerie, which were military police units. He served in Poland, France, Belgium, Ukraine, Lithuania and Russia. His unit was Feldgendarmerie-Abteilung 521 (mot.), which was part of Panzer Group 4. Wounded in action in Russia on 22 August 1942, he had the Iron Cross First and Second Classes for bravery, the Eastern Front Medal or the Wound Badge. Schwarzenegger appears to have received much medical attention. Initially, he was treated in the military hospital in Łódź, but according to the records he also suffered recurring bouts of malaria, which led to his discharge in February, 1944.

Catchier 2020 slogan? "Enough."

Nerdwriter - How Not To Adapt A Movie

RedSky says...

It was definitely dumbed down thematically though, especially from 1st/2nd GiG. While they were pretty pretentious (e.g. 'second order simulacra'), at least they were full of things to think about. The whole 'give consent' theme was as far as I can tell introduced in the adaptation and immensely cringe inducing.

What also irritated me is how they created a weird mish mash of the seperate Ghost in the Shell stories for no good reason. Why did they have to combine the 2nd GiG antagonist with the original movie's key plot scenes? It was just strange and unnecessary.

I don't at all mind the westernisation / white lead. Felt that controversy was nonsense. It's a Hollywood adaptation, why even bother remaking it if you're not going to have a new take on it or adapt it to be more familiar to local (American / English) audiences?

Same thing with the Netflix Death Note adapation. No idea if it will actually be any good but couldn't care less that they moved the location to the US and made the lead characters white. There are already multiple Japanese live action Death Note movies with Japanese leads. What's the point in another?

Mordhaus said:

I liked the movie adaptation. That said, if you have seen the various iterations of Ghost in the Shell, they don't seem tied to any common theme other than the basic one of whether or not a person's ghost (soul,id) can remain intact in a body that is heavily changed with cybernetics. The live action movie held that theme as well.

why do people continue to believe in stupid economic ideas?
