Chain of Fools : Upgrading Through Every Version of Windows

Croccydile says...

Some people may still wonder why there is such a legacy extension in Windows with supporting stuff that old, but there are plenty of companies out there that proving this. I've come across at least several examples of software I've seen from a vendor being sold as new that was likely built in Windows 3.1. 16-bit apps in 2010-2011? How do they even have the software to make this stuff anymore?

Regardless, it makes me thank whomever at Microsoft has the arduous task of having to make sure NTVDM still operates in modern versions of Windows. Well, except for 64-bit os where there is no longer 16-bit support, so perhaps this will force the hand of those still building legacy apps into this century.

Alton Brown on Salt

Croccydile says...

This reminds me of the Iron Chef (japanese) episode where the challenger was a "master of salt" or something where he had like a half dozen types of salt. One of them was only collected during the full moon (?!) on some island off the coast of Japan... ummm yeah.

He still lost.

Normally Alton Brown is a pretty cool guy but damn, it's salt man.

Lag Comparison by Whalemasher Black Ops Client Vs Host

Croccydile says...

I should probably toss out (despite the fact I do not play this game) it was mentioned by a couple of reddit users when this was shown over there that his comparison is flawed because he is relying on replay theater to demonstrate the lag. The replay mode is inaccurate compared to actual gameplay due to keyframes probably being out of sync and the problems demonstrated may have not actually appeared as shown.

Still, this a good argument towards dedicated servers. In a P2P system the host has 0ms lag when someone else might have 150ms, and can make the difference between derp and killing someone.

I loved these guys, made copy protected discs alot more enjoyable.

Really though, last I checked out my C64 system a few years back alot of the original discs no longer work due to faded protection (weak sectors, etc) that has died out with old age... yet the cracked discs all still work just fine. I guess this is great way of preserving the oldies

The Sounds of Star Wars

>> ^westy:

bit retarded having a book for this ,
would much rather have a proper 50-80 min documentry with the sfx and footage stuck together rather than some shitty clunky book with crap speakers.
I mean even if it was like this clip but just 60min of it that would be fine , or a book that comes with a DVD "sound of star wars" , containg 60 min documtry , and full music score for star wars that would be a far more appealing gift or perchise for people from 10-60 than this retarded book.

I cannot express how much disappointment I have that this might as well be a childs book with the silly voice module on the side rather than a proper DVD documentary. They even have the gall to say they are doing something new when you could find talking Elmo books for what, at least a decade now?

Harry Potter: The Tale of the Three Brothers

Croccydile says...

As much as I like Harry Potter films, the Deathly Hallows Part 1 was indeed boring. Maybe it was interesting to those who read the books (I did not) but damn it, (possible spoiler?) why is literally half the movie them wandering aimlessly camping out?

I swear I was thinking of redlettermedia reviews of Star Wars Ep 1/2 while watching the movie about how it deserves a similar treatment.

You both are correct but when I look back at history and warfare being done in this manner, it makes me wonder why nobody thought of really doing things differently until World War I. I'm wholly guessing here, but I imagine that part of the reason trench warfare was invented was nobody really wanted to go line up on a battle field when you had stuff like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxim_gun being pointed at you.

Repeating rifles, pistols and machine guns did not really come about until after the American Civil War... perhaps this was a good thing as well

World of Warcraft (WoW): Catacylsm (Videogames Talk Post)

Croccydile says...

Have not played in about 3 months. I'll probably look at the expansion anyways but knowing Blizzard I will probably be bored pretty quickly this time.

The large disappointment is perhaps because I went to Blizzcon 2009 with 4 others and we were all rather looking forward to the expansion. Then they started to cut features and change things. I think now the only thing that is still left is that the expansion is still called Cataclysm.

In other words, most of the cool shit they talked about at Blizzcon is not in the game. In particular I was really annoyed with this getting axed. http://www.wowwiki.com/Paths_of_the_Titans. Now the game is about as Wal-Mart as it can possibly get, and it was already dirt easy. Simplified talent trees and all, I looked at the recent changes and it just looks... boring.

The server I played on was useless anyways, probably one of the most dead servers in the game. Everyone I knew transferred off. Bah. I don't want to pay more money just to move my characters around to join my friends.

Oh yeah, then there is this little game on the horizon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Old_Republic

New TSA screening procedures (User Poll by MarineGunrock)

Croccydile says...

I still remember when discussing (well before the new body scanners, years ago) with someone about the TSA and the checks they do. He seemed to be OK with whatever they did and was of the standard "well if you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about" crowd. I had asked him "Well what if they started doing (insert unlikely scenario here) would you be ok with that then?" and he did not seem to really think that would happen. He just eventually would call me paranoid, although I think he probably imagined as secretly being a terroist. Or something. With the past week of news about the TSA now I do not feel so bad looking back.

The biggest trouble is that the TSA is always knee-jerk reaction to whatever threat that occurs rather than looking forward. They will always forever be playing catchup rather than implementing procedures that work. Shoe bomber? Have everyone x-ray their shoes... afterward. Underwear guy? Full body scans... afterward. What's next?

Granted there is no perfect solution. Regressing on the security back to the 60s would yield an incident (hijacking, bombing, etc) where everyone will just panic and demand more intrusive scans than before. Israeli level interrigations and questioning (they do high security through profiling/body language/etc rather than relying on machinery) while being skilled is impractical in the US. Throwing out the fact you would need to show up to the airport hours early it would simply cost too much for a country our size.

What gets under my skin from sheer stupidity though, is why are the pilots being subject to this? They just have to push the stick forward to be a terrorist. Going through those scanners day in and day out (when even TSA agents themselves have worried about its radiation from the outside) cannot be a good thing for them. Damn right they should be protesting this crap.

Personally? I'm really torn. If someone does The Dark Knight or uses a buttplug bomb I can only forsee flying in the US becoming The Fifth Element where everyone is simply knocked out for the duration of the flight. As much as this country puts up with I would have a really hard time believing that the average citizen would put up with downright cavity searches before getting on a plane.

Then again... I am probably sounding naive. This security theatre bullshit has got to stop either way. I'm genuinely more afraid of the TSA goons than the remote chance of someone blowing the plane to smitherines. Fuck, mechanical failure or some other fault is likely much more of a threat than terrorism.

</rant> The reason I sound pissed off is that if I want to fly I have to go through the redneck rivera TSA that is part of MCO here in Florida. I knew they were lying about the stored images from the start but what is batshit stupid is they installed the scanners there just the past week and already the images are being leaked out. Pardon the expression but Jesus Holy Titty Fucking Christ.

(Reference: http://gizmodo.com/5690749/ This is what I read earlier today, and what just makes my blood boil. Then again when the local news website posted the story about the guy who is in hot water over refusing the scan and patdown facing fines... most of the commenters were of the "Flying is a privilege not a right" or "YOU HAVE TO DO THIS TO FLY BECUASE OF 9/11 GOD BLESS THEIR SOULS" bullshit. I guess in Florida its ok to shred the 4th amendment as long as it you are a believer.)

Fuck this. I'm cancelling my damn trip next year. I'll fucking drive.

3D Video Capture with Kinect

Multiple cameras, and you have something pretty cool.
..somehow, I have the feeling that the porn industry will be quick to jump on this.

I think it was stated by one of these guys that multiple cameras is not possible yet because of the IR beam it projects. Adding in a second or third Kinect would disrupt the first one.

Either way, this is a fascinating piece of hardware despite the $150 price tag being a bit steep. However, to hardware hackers this is an insane bargain and a dream.

Angry Video Game Nerd: Little Red Hood

Croccydile says...

Quick technical explanation: As most of the unlicensed NES games simply had a hack/bypass for the 10NES protection chip, this game uses the chip from a real game. Hence... the need for a real one to make it work and why it works in the toploader NES. (The toploader has no 10NES and is immune to the blinking screen of annoyance)
