Darwin Award Winner

Complaint about title, DAWs have to die to win. Merely coming close is just an Honorable Mention.

The techinical qualifications are a bit nebulous. Can you only remove yourself from the "[collective] human genome" by death? Or is it sufficient to steralize yourself and ensure you leave no progeny?

The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of
the human genome by honoring those who
accidentally remove themselves from it...

Though, in this case you're correct either way, I'm just being pedantic.

There is NOTHING wide angle about that camera..

Seriously? You can see the bend in the horizon line and the bridge supports. That's plain old standard fisheye. Not sure how much it affects the ability to judge distance near the center of the camera, but it's there, your brain just filters out the distortion after watching for a few seconds.

Don't stop in the outer lane!!

I was tought to allow 3 seconds distance between yourself and the car you're following in regular driving conditions. More for wet, or low visibility. That said, I think people generally don't think 2 seconds is a problem.

Through the latter half of this video he's following a second or less behind. That's absolutely tailgating and if the lead driver legitimately had to slam on the breaks, the trailing driver absolutely would have hit him.

All three drivers were at fault to some degree here. The tailgater was being an ass and definitely following too close, the rearmost was following way behind (based on delay until impact) but wasn't paying an ounce of attention. And the lead driver WILLFULLY created an incredibly dangerous situation.

I do recall hearing the "Staying Alive" bit somewhere (methinks Radio Lab podcast?) but they ALSO mentioned that "Another One Bites the Dust" has nearly the same beats per minute. Clearly, the mental context of the latter is a bit more depressing, but hey, if you're a Queen fan and know the timing of that song intimately, you can sing that in your head instead.

Upside down, underwater, under ice fishing!

Contagion21 says...

It's not toodifficult to be upside down like that with a dry suit. When you're first learning to dive with a dry suit it's actually a bit difficult to master NOT doing that. Any excess air within the suit will tend to bubble up to the highest point of the suit, so if you just tilt a little, the air will go to your feet, and turn you vertical.

That would USUALLY be fairly bad technique unless you were intentially trying to keep your fins away from the bottom while you were looking at something or gathering something, etc. It's more difficult to control your buoyancy and assecnt/descent rate, but since they're just bumping against the ice, that's a non-factor.

All that said, it's probably pretty difficult to make it LOOK normal while upside down performing all those actions.

I'm convinced, without a doubt that the world is round.
But, the wind idea is interesting/facinating, and the question of would I get dizzy standing on the axis of the planet if I were used to standing at the equator, are all good questions.
Does anyone have a link that may discuss these phenomenon? ... Sometimes an explanation is more convincing that saying, "Well that's a stupid statement or opinion." Maybe someone schooled in this area (or who has more spare time than others)can guide us to some interesting reading on this. <img class="smiley" src="http://cdn.videosift.com/cdm/emoticon/smile.gif">

It's a frame of reference issue. It's harder to define mathmatically, but the view point that the earth is standing still and the rest of the universe is revolving around it is just conceptually valid.

The wind argument assumes that the atmosphere is not part of the earth and should be sitting still while the earth rotates beneath it. However, the physical planet applies more force to the atmosphere than the surrounding vacuum so eventually, the atmosphere will also rotate in sync with the planet itself based on Newton's laws.

The pope did recently reject human evolution though... I guess science really doesn't deal kindly with the whole anthropocentric human-worshipping that is at the basis of monotheism, which created god in man's image.

To clarify, he rejected random evolution. That is, that it could have occured naturally and without guidance. (See Dawkins writings on why evolution should never be considered "random" to begin with, but that's another issue entirely.) So, based on what I'm reading in that link, he's not saying we don't have a shared ancestry with other primates, just that IF we do, it's not a random occurance.

So catholics are still allowed to believe that evolution has occured, even for humans, they just have to accept that God is the driving force behind it.

The Difference Speeding Makes

Contagion21 says...

Yes, the slower you're travelling, the shorter your stopping distance. But building a scenario to demonstrate that by using the EXACT difference in stopping distance required to prove the point a bit contrived. Not that I'm justifying speeding (in my car). My wife says I drive like a grandma.

Logic, physics, and probability all say that when you shift the mass of the earth (ice caps melting), seismic activity will increase.

Wow.. stretch much? I'm not sure if that's an Appeal to Authority (to the sciences of Logic, Physics and Probability) or just Begging the Question (that the mass of the earth has shifted).

Given the relative mass of the crust, and even smaller relative mass of the ice upon that crust, I would wager that the ice caps could completely and totally melt and have an almost, if not entirely, imperceptible difference on the mass distribution for the planet as a whole.

You're doing a disservice to the understanding we have for plate tectonics to imply that earthquakes increase due to global warming and that this isn't just the simple, and well understood case of a massive earthquake due to a subduction zone between the Pacific and North American plates.

However, feel free to back up any of the following claims:

1) Seismic activity has increased

2) Melting ice has a meaningful impact on planetary mass distribution

3) The poles are shifting

Amazing keeper blunder

Contagion21 says...

The keeper has a right to be upset.

[CutPaste]
Law 12 (Fouls and Misconduct) includes the words “prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands” as an offense punishable by an indirect free kick. By tradition and interpretation, this violation is described more generally as any action by a player which interferes with the opposing goalkeeper’s ability to get the ball back into active play freely and quickly.

A goalkeeper is considered to be in the process of “releasing the ball” from the first moment when he or she has clearly taken hand control of the ball until the moment when the ball has been clearly released into play. This includes any time when the goalkeeper is:
•bouncing the ball,
•running with the ball
•in the process of dropping the ball in preparation for kicking it
•throwing the ball

During the time the goalkeeper has control of the ball and is preparing to release it into active play, an opponent may not stand or move so close as to restrict the direction or distance of the goalkeeper’s release.

[/CutPaste]

So, not so much a keeper blunder, but an obviously bad decision by the referee to NOT call a foul on the player who clearly and intentionally placed himeself to interfere with the goalkeeper's distribution.
