Scientists Scan Movie Clips From Your Brain

I don't understand how this works. I read the articles and I am a little skeptical. I've designed fMRI and DTI algorithms for years and I don't see why they keep talking about fMRI and brain waves. fMRI is an activity map that is related to the hot spots in the brain where the hydrogen protons aligned by the magnetic field resonate to the frequency of the emitter (TR/Echo Time) and only show consumption of glucose (hydrogen protons motility) during a designed paradigm, which in this case would be having the subject watch a video. Diffuse Tensor Imaging will help map the neurons going there in case a surgical procedure is necessary, and that's about it. Extrapolating fMRI (a very coarse k-space reconstruction) to brainwaves (an EEG signal) and images sounds very suspicious to me, and nothing published so far explains how this is technically done. I understand the excitement and it certainly would be possible in the future, but under the current state of the art, I don't see how this is possible, especially with fMRI or Fractional Anisotropy.

...says "MonkeySpank", lol! Really, thank you for the insight, but the association between your well informed comment and your avatar is what did it for me.

spiders hear with hairs on there legs I also don't think spiders have evolved in the same way as many mammals especially pack mammals and mammals that have mothers that look after them , making it pretty much totally pointless talking to them.

I tend to think when people talk to animals, they're really just talking to themselves, like repeating a mantra. Treating the spider like he would a child may even remove stress and fear, making him able to do this.

And if they can "hear" with the hair on their legs, she can probably feel the vibration of his voice, I guess.

It's cool, but I'm pretty darn sure it's not done just as shown in that video, those pictures SCREAM rotoscoped (even if hand rotoscoped), and there's no way he drew a picture, threw it onto the pile then drew another one with no onion skinning at all, there's no way the pages would always be in the same spot, or the lines be perfectly attuned to each other frame to frame.
So, yes, awesome animation, but a little dishonest in how it's 'actually' done.

I think the reason his hand is on a mouse is because it is advancing the film by one frame in a monitor or lightbox built into the desk or projecting down onto it. Looking at it again, I think the projector is above the desk, probably in the same box as a camera that takes a pic of the page when each is done.
For me, that does not at all diminish how impressive this video is. He not only made every one of those sketches by hand, but somebody also moved the camera all over the place, millimeter by millimeter between frames.
And the music is awesome, too. From an old video game? Anybody know what it is?

this is such a huge defilement of the original, of which I am quite a fan (Jackson 5 I mean). But.... I have to agree it is really cool.

I don't understand why they thought that was necessary.
Pure ego. Martial arts in the US is full of charlatans and egotists. Just the fact that this man uses his former Marine background as a resume indicates that he lacks any substantial success in his life. He's created a world for himself in which he's important by opening a dojo. Someone came along and threatened his personal self image and he reacted murderously. I'd guess he had very low self esteem due to domestic violence until he joined the Marines and found an identity.
Aaaaand, I didn't watch the video. I can't watch that. I believe it's important that it exists but there's no reasonable excuse for me to watch it.
