Actually, you can see he does make it off the ground...but opening the doors for the gear causes drag, and that slowed him down enough to settle back down. Any TRAINED pilot would know that...

Holy cow. Looks like they were planning to land like that, but overshot enough to trim a tree. Amazing those blades didn't come apart into the crowd.
