We're Working on it.

Hi all. I know we haven't been around much in the last couple of days. We've all been busy trying to fix the new VideoSift. We know it's slow, and that's been our focus area. We've got all hands on deck making changes that will bring VideoSift up to speed.

Bear with us over the next few days. After we get the performance issue under control, we'll go back and work on other smaller issues.

Maybe we bit off more than we chew, a new server and completely new architecture at once :-0 - but fortune favors the brave, so we'll keep going.

for the love of pete! First of all, static1 should be running a lighthttpd or something with mongrel.

Secondly, disable logins temporarily so all page views are the anon account.

Thirdly, put up a static front page just for now.

Also, I'd try disabling the code that increments "views".
I'm assuming you are out of RAM. Is this a VM or your own box? did you set hdparm and noatime?

static1.videosift.com is running off of a CDN, so it's not on the box at all.

We have plenty of ram, CPU is our issue, particulary with Apache.

And we're on a dedicated dual Xeon box.

Yes, since yesterday it's improved, thanks.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already, but I was hoping that the Unsifted page could default to the setting of 'Newest queue date'? Not simply because it is as it was in the previous version, but some users may not notice this setting as they're browsing. I fear that new posts could go un-noticed and expire if they're only seeing the 'most voted for' first.

But otherwise, very nice update - I love the compact listing style, since the preview images often show little about the video.

joedirt says...

Yes, the pages load pretty quickly now, it is just the initial 5 second delay until it the server responds.

And I also think it might be nice to either be able to set in the profile the default sorting (dropdown) or maybe set by a cookie for your previous preference.

Is there any way for me to enlarge the thumbnails? I use
videosift 99% of the time from my HTPC, and with the previous layout the thumbnails were big enough to be easily viewed from a normal living room distance. Now they're so small as to be completely unusable.

joedirt says...

aero, nope. Instead of the page waiting to load 20 images and embeds from youtube, now there is a cached thumbnail and javascript twistie. You can always enlarge the fonts, so you know which videos to expand and then click play on the flash.

CDN is the old hosting provider. But that is a good idea. Maybe I'll start using coral for the front page... execpt I think the 5 second delay still is in play. (You shouldn't be sifting at work.)

BoneyD - the rationale for changing the default sort option was discussed here. It doesn't seem to be working correctly, but I think everything is lower priority to server responsiveness.

Unfortunately the recent speed-up has more to do with coming out of peak time, than anything we've fixed.

Tomorrow is going to be a bit rough I'm afraid- because US Mondays are usually very high (slackers!)

Farhad2000 says...

Nice work on getting the site back up running, I hope everything gets fixed soon.

I wanted to mentioned that play listed You tube videos embeds are no longer working, the submission just says it's an invalid embed code.

Thanks Farhad- I don't understand about the playlisted you tube videos - do you mean they are not displaying from the playlists? Can you give me an example? I couldn't find anything not working from the playlists.

joedirt says...

Dag, I think he means the YT embed that have the multi-video thingy with like part1, part2, etc. I don't feel like digging up an example, but you know what I mean.

Fedquip says...

How often are you feeding the hamsters? What I have read is that they like to be fed twice a day, fresh pellets if possible, that will make them run faster and more consistently.

gorgonheap says...

Just another issue I noticed. I have no wait time for saves or promotes. Seriously I could save or promote to my hearts delight with no wait time. Is this a glitch or intentional. Either way I thought you should know.
