VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Video Page

As our more veteran members have pointed out from time to time, it's been quite some time since we made any big changes around here. And as @dag announced last week VideoSift is 9 years old!

As the years have flown by and the Internet culture has continued to evolve, we, like ever before, want to keep nimble to continue making improvements so The Sift is still a place you will love to call home. VideoSift v5 was a pretty huge change, mostly for the better, though we know there are some things that have bothered people for a long time. The biggest thing we've felt in the past two years could be improved is that there is just so much content on every page, especially the individual video ("permalink") page.

We started working on a neat new layout several months ago with the hopes of revamping the entire site with this awesome new structure and functionality. Unfortunately, as sole developer of this project (for about 8 years now), real life has become a black hole of time and it's become too big a task to be completed any time soon, but we really wanted to at least get the video permalink page out there for you to enjoy but also to gauge user acceptance and decide if the rest of the site should go the same route.

I'm being long-winded as always, but now let me cut to the chase. We are here to unveil the the VS6 beta video permalink page. None of the site is changing right now except that page. It will be the new format for logged-out users always. For logged-in members it will default to the new format, but you can toggle it on or off with a link in the footer (on the video permalink page).

Here are screenshots of the sections of the new page layout and a description of what you'll find in each.

Header

The new header menu bar is very minimal, just a very narrow band at the very top edge of the page. Immediately below that is the video, which will be as large as possible within your browser window, often going from edge to edge.

We have cut WAY back to just 3 navigation tabs in the menu (minus the Login button which I don't count because it doesn't actually navigate anywhere). We were able to simplify the body of the page by inserting much of our content into this simple menu.

Watch

Hover over the Watch tab to access loads and loads of on-demand, dynamically-generated video listings in the pop-open sub-menu. Here you'll find the Top New Videos, which you'll notice is no longer in a sidebar panel. You'll see as many as can fit on two rows in your window. Hot and Rising shows the hottest new videos that you'd also find on the homepage (with "hotness" sorting enabled). Just Published is all videos ordered by newest publish date first. Recent Hits is something new which shows you some of the top videos that you may have missed in the past few weeks. Upcoming shows videos from the unsifted queue.

Not pictured here is the "My Videos" sub-menu for members which lists your most recently submitted videos.

Discuss

As any repeat visitor knows, VideoSift's meat and potatoes are videos and discussions, respectively. The Discuss tab is all about communication betwixt members of the community. Top Comments shows the highest ranked newest comments. New Comments lists all most recently submitted comments. Sift Talk Forum displays the most recent Sift Talk posts. Chat Lounge is a glance at the most recent chat messages in Sift Lounge.

Not pictured here is "My Comments" for members which lists all your most recently submitted comments.

About

One of the biggest and most valid complaints we've always wanted to improve on is that VideoSift is complicated! There's so much to learn and it's intimidating to new users, and we've never had a really good way to introduce the site well. Thanks in large part to a few members, but @Zawash in particular (via a rich Sift Talk post), we came up with the idea to put a bunch of introductory tips right into the header. We intend for this to be a go-to place for new visitors to dip their toes without getting overwhelmed.

This tab is definitely the one that needs the most expansion and development. We really just based it mainly on @Zawash's input, but we'd love for it to be even easier to skim through to learn even more about The Sift. You'll notice that this desire to simplify for new users is a reoccurring theme.

Video Details

Again, to simplify the page, we've removed a whole lot of the masses of content that's always been carried along within a video. Now we're focusing big and clearly on just the very most pertinent details.

You'll notice that the voting count for logged-out users shows a percentage of up-votes-to-total-votes. We feel this is a better way for a non-member to gauge the quality of a video. For logged-in members it still shows the normal vote counts like always.

Below the title/author/votes/sharing band comes "the rest." The main section starts out with the video description and the comment listing below that. It looks almost the same as it did before, but it's been simplified visually by hiding all the meta details/tools until you hover over a comment, so they look cleaner overall.

The sidebar is no longer a column with panel after panel of content. It's simplified to show just videos that we hope a user will really want to watch. The first section is Suggested Videos which shows the top videos from the past 4 days in the same channels as the video being viewed. The second and last section shows Related Videos.

Footer

Finally, here's the new page footer. Again, it's uber-simplified. The most noteworthy change are the tools at the top-center of the footer. There is a text size selector offering either the default text size or the larger text size. No, it's not a revolutionary idea, but it is definitely something that will help lots of members whose eyes ail them while on VS, such as @Boise_Lib (who cited our poor visibility as his reason for leaving) and @oritteropo.

The second tool is the standard Light vs. Dark site theme switcher.

The final tool which is only visible to logged-in members is the Beta Opt Out link which will allow you to turn off the new VS6 beta video page if you just want the old cluttered video page back.

Again, we're offering this up as a potential next great version of VideoSift (some day), hope it attracts more new visitors to stay for longer, and hope it makes it more usable and enjoyable for you our dedicated veterans. Let us know what you think, what's good, what should be changed, and if you have any technical issues (which we're expecting you will because you always do, don't you).

I love you.

(P.S. If you opted out and want to opt back in, click here. And there's also an opt-in link on the old video page, right of the video title.)
gorillaman says...

Well I don't entirely hate it, which is my usual reaction to change.

There's very little wasted space. It's much less cluttered and pretty intuitive; I thought I'd stumbled onto the mobile site by accident when I first saw it.

Not sure about the suggested videos - looks like you're just going to keep seeing the same ones from popular channels again and again. There's less space for the comments section which is surely bad. The various big buttons for facebook, twitter, etc. are garbage but I'll just adblock them. You can't see a video's channels and tags on its page or who's voted for it.

Putting a feed from the recent comments and the lounge in the discuss tab is big nifty. The minimised footer is a colossal improvement.

MilkmanDan says...

I'm sure some of this is just resistance to change, but...

Didn't really like any of the differences. Old style had more functionality/information/etc. in a smaller pixel footprint. If I want the video to be big, I can fullscreen it. I like the older style Top New Videos, or Upcoming Videos list with ranks and votes easily visible in a small space. The old footer was big, but had stuff (links) that I actually used or referred to spread through it, and it was easily ignorable at the bottom of the page the rest of the time.

Overall experience is sorta like going from Office 2003 to Office 2010. I can tell that it is probably still capable of doing what I want it to, but I no longer have any idea how to make that happen, and I get the definite feeling that it has been designed for a "new market", which I read as "somebody other than me".

Probably one of those signs that I'm getting old.

...Sorry @lucky760, don't take any of that too seriously. Just my first reaction.

enoch says...

well,i was off drifting in the ether for a bit and what do i come back to?
a super sleek and easily intuitive sift.

my personal page remains unchanged but the front page looks great!
shiny.very very shiny.

i love change.
well done lucky and those who had such great input.

lucky760 says...

@eric3579 Please read the third paragraph and this post's title.

@gorillaman Thanks for the surprisingly positive feedback. That's a small victory by itself.

@MilkmanDan Thanks for being so respectful with your negative feedback. No worries at all about sharing your true reaction and thoughts. Aversion to change is expected. All I'll try to clarify is that everything isn't harder to figure out now; all the old content you're referring to is now neatly tucked centrally in the easily accessible header menu.

@enoch Thanks for the kind feedback!

@blackfox42 Whoops! The edit link is one of the things excluded accidentally. I'll work on adding it back in asap. To opt back in use the link at the bottom of this ST post body.

eric3579 says...

Aesthetically looks nice and is more appealing in that way.

Personally usability/navigating is what i think is an issue.
Navigating is more difficult(as in more work)
Cant just click on 'discussion' to get to recent comments like you can now(clicking on comments). Have to use the sub menu. Also 'Watch' has to use sub menu to get to a front page(although i do like 'hot' and 'just published' in the menu). Sift talk also more difficult to access. The more difficult to get to the less traffic it will see. Current drop down is much easier then having to navigate to the left hand side to get to the sub menu.

I found myself using my back browser button cos its easier when changing between front page and a video ive clicked on. Right now i don't need to do that(can just click video button)

Also change stresses me out. You know, cos i'm old

Maybe i just need a couple beers.

newtboy says...

Not my cup of tea. I liked the old format way more. Also, I can no longer see if I have voted on a comment or not/it's no longer bold if I have voted. I'll miss that.
Can someone tell me how to opt out? I don't see it. I wanna stick with the older version if I can.
I'll also miss the videos on the side and at the bottom. I often used those lists to find other videos I wanted to see. Now that's ALL gone.

eric3579 says...

So now im finding myself opening videos by left clicking my mouse and opening 'open link it new tab' so i can avoid having to use the new sub menu to get to where i need to go. May be more difficult due to i'm just not use to it yet. Nevertheless my work around is easier for me is it just me?

lucky760 says...

@blackfox42 - Fixed that link to opt back in, so it should work for you now.

@Baristan - That sounds good in theory (and I thought so in the distant past), but in practice it makes the site effectively unusable.

@eric3579 - I know there are lots of things you (and others) were bound to have issues with. As I explained in my dissertation, that's part of the point of doing this, to hear from you all what's wrong or what's missing or what should change. For example, being unable to click a menu tab to actually go somewhere can be fixed by adding a link in the sub-menu (or something).

To you and @newtboy, a big point about all the new header content is that you can now see all that information and even more all in that one area without searching all over the page for it.

Good feedback about the font. I've changed it and I think it's much better.

The video voters and who's viewing are currently excluded, but (yet again), that's part of the point of this beta test. If everyone feels they need to be added back in, then we (meaning dag and myself or us all as a community) can consider how we should include those things. (If/when they're added back in, it'll only be for logged-in members.)

@newtboy - Not everything everyone is noticing is intended to be that way. The indication that you voted on a comment wasn't supposed to be missing. And it's fixed now.

The opt out link is in the footer of the new video page, however to you and everyone else, I'd request and encourage that you stick with the beta test for a couple of days if you can bear it to at the very least try to help us with more, fuller feedback once you've become a little more accustomed to the changes.

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone. Keep it coming.

moonsammy says...

The new look is fine overall, can see it being very useful on smaller screens, and I don't mind the video being larger in general on my pc screen. Perhaps I'm missing something, but none of the tags / channels appear to be present. That's one change I can't get behind, as I've always loved the metadata that the VS community adds to the content. Bring back the tags / channels (or make them more obvious, if I'm missing them) and v6 is good by me.

eric3579 says...

All things missing from the upper right area i always use.

*Easily viewable sift lounge(#) in upper right. How am i gonna know if anyone's in their waiting for someone to join. Removing this will kill the lounge(imo)

*No search?

*Missing the 'Hello, eric3579 (3)'
No place to jump to my profile or view my number of pps. What if i want to promote the video im on but dont know if i have pps. Will i have to navigate somewhere just to check

eric3579 says...

The font seems to still be a problem when its regular size its to small. http://videosift.com/video/Police-State-Too-Much-Send-in-a-Marine#comment-1846349
-edit- small issue all better,thanks

When a comment gets votes and increase font size the letters spread to far apart. Looks a mess. http://videosift.com/video/Police-State-Too-Much-Send-in-a-Marine#comment-1846085

Also prefer the old font on top of size and spacing issues. Just easier on the eyes(reading wise).

mxxcon says...

Everything below is my personal opinion:
Putting Light/Dark, Font Size into the footer is bad usability.
You expect people with poor eye-sight to scroll past all the text they can't read to randomly stumble on those rather small buttons.

Unless I really care about the topic, if a video has more than a couple of comments I usually don't bother scrolling all the way down. So putting any 'usability'/customization features down there would make them undiscoverable for many users.

Are channels and tags going away or just not implemented yet?

ant says...

Ah, I see it now. It is only when viewing the videos not the home page.

Hmm, I am not sure if I like the SiftTalk's crowded list.

lucky760 said:

Did you opt out?

Can you see it if you view a video page in a browser window while logged out?

lucky760 says...

It's good to know that people want channels and tags back. As with voters and "who's viewing now," we can have a discussion about how to add those back in.

Will ponder how to display lounge users, PPs, and search.

@blackfox42 - Thanks for reminding about gorillaman's comment, which was actually about the Suggested Videos, and I'll have to ponder that as well. (It was @moonsammy who just mentioned channels and tags.)

@mxxcon - They're way down there because you're only likely to change those settings once. Furthermore, if you're not using the site enough to ever scroll to the bottom of the page, then they're of no use to you anyway. If you find them and want to use them, great. Otherwise, meh. It would be less desirable to eat up valuable real estate were it nearer the top of the page.

billpayer says...

Something just happened when I posted a video and it's fucking cool !
Everything went super minimal (not what I see here on this page ? Am I in some kind of TV mode ?

Whatever it is cool... Love the new clean layout ! TV ready !!! About time !!!!!!!!! Whoootttt!!!!

blackfox42 says...

Are you wanting to do away with channels? If not then if people can't see what channels are allocated to a submission they won't go looking very hard to verify if it's potentially missing from one.

Also, with the new format I can't see where to bookmark a submission anymore

(Sidenote: not meaning to sound negative with any of these, it's just mentioned some of it may have been accidentally overlooked, and it never hurts to ask )

lucky760 said:

ChaosEngine says...

@lucky760, I presume you run google analytics (or something similiar) over the site?

Would be interesting to know how different people use it.
For me, I always click on recent comments, top 15, etc. I also like seeing the top rated new comments (it often leads to the most interesting discussions).

Would also be good if pure invocation comments "dead" "ban" etc were somehow filtered out of the recent comments list.

I don't think I've ever clicked on the top 15 sifters lists on the bottom.

I also agree with @MilkmanDan re the video size. I generally watch videos full screen if I'm interested in the visual content. If it's primarily audio, it probably won't even be on the top tab.

Zawash says...

I miss:
The channel list - maybe a menu of its own.
When watching a video - overview over and links to the channels the video belongs to.
"My Videosift" menu options, with links to my own profile, account preferences etc. This menu item should be replaced by a "log in/become member" when not logged in.
The Search bar.
More links in the new awesome About sections - "Try clicking on the various channels" should have a link, and "The Top New Videos list is always full of" should have either a link or a description "(under Watch/Top New Videos in the menu)" etc.

brycewi19 says...

Agreed that the channels need to be present.

Also, the placement of the vote total with the upvote and downvote arrows are placed so far at the bottom of the page (at least on Firefox) I either need to scroll down to access it to vote or I have to be very accurate with my cursor.

Adjusting that up off the "bottom" of the page (without having to scroll) would be nice to have access to. Otherwise, I could imagine videos not getting voted for at all. Which would not be good needless to say.

RFlagg says...

My only issue with the design is the hover comes too quick. I tend to mouse around a lot, and jump tabs while watching videos and even if I am getting ready to tab out for a moment, the hover effect blocking the video sort of irritates. If it pushed the rest of the video down below the hover, that'd be okay, or a slightly longer hover, that'd be good.

Other than the hover effect, I don't mind the layout personally. Sort of a more "Theater mode", which both YouTube and Twitch offer as an option. I'd say perhaps offer this new Theater mode as the default, and if a user sets it to "normal" than allow for that (non-users get a cookie that expires quicker rather than an option setting).

I'm not going to break much new ground with the rest, most of it has been stated and I'm echoing with my own thoughts.

The loss of channels seems odd. Either put it under the submitter or under the description. Same with number of views and video length.

The who voted could be put into the hover effect over the vote counter, again with a small delay.

Perhaps time stamps on the comments.

I'm looking at this via a desktop I should note, with a 1080 screen, so the layout works so far. The vote buttons for me are in a good spot. How this works via mobile I don't know yet.

blahpook says...

Ooooooh fancy.

The What to Post sub-tab (?) doesn't work for me, and when I click the FAQ sub-tab, I can't seem to click back to anything else on About.

I like the format though. Think it makes videos more widely shareable.

RFlagg says...

Also... the NSFW tag is missing completely on the video page itself. We at the least need the NSFW, Long and like tags showing up. (I was going to edit the original post but figured it was upvoted so seen and also this sort of deserves it's own mention.) Not sure position, but around Title and before submitter. Be it below or to the side I don't know.

Example, I clicked this from the front page http://videosift.com/video/My-Bow-Breathing and didn't notice in the main listing it was NSFW... moot point as I'm not at work or public, but had somebody just sent the link and not noted it as NSFW... and there's the issue, people getting the link to just one video itself. While the front page notes it, the video page itself is missing that important information.

blackfox42 says...

Just noticed, under the Watch menu, if I actually click on the words Just Published instead of hovering my mouse, it takes me to a page suggesting I seem lost and I'm attempting to access a page that doesn't exist.

Esoog says...

I agree with some of the comments that were already made:
- I missing seeing the channels
- I feel the hover over pop-out is too fast as well
- It feels like a lot of wasted space...its hard to describe, but things feel too big. I use everything from a tablet, to a 27 inch monitor, to a 40 inch TV to browse this site, and I on this new design, I find myself zooming out 3 or 4 times to get a 'comfortable' fit on the screen.

Most importantly, 95% of my activity on this site is opening a video from the front page, or from the "top new videos by vote" list. Then when I'm finished with that video, I quickly find another from that same list. I miss having that list ever-present on the screen. I just dont like the mouse-over pop-out. It lacks ranks and the thumbnails are too big. And it doesnt look like I can adjust the list length like I did on the 'old' design, to show 20 videos, instead of the original 10 or 15 (whatever the default was).

Lastly, I've mentioned this before to some people: I would LOVE a way to filter siftbot replies and user invocations in comments. I hate having to scroll past 8 or 9 siftbot replies, and user invocations, just to find 1 actual comment buried somewhere in there. If all someone does is comment *Down Under, and siftbot replies that its added the Down Under channel, then allow us to hide those messages.

But most importantly, I would like the ever-present Top Videos list on each page.

lucky760 says...

@blackfox42 - There was no intention to permanently remove anything really, especially not channels. The biggest thing was to get this new very slimmed down version out there for you to review. If everyone said "Meh, we don't need the channels," then maybe we wouldn't add them back in.

It's important that we hear from as many people as possible what works and doesn't work with the new layout, so to everyone, if your opinion has already been stated (e.g., "I want the channels!") please don't hold back from repeating the sentiment. The more we hear about a common opinion, the more important we know it must be.

Bookmark is currently gone, but that was intended to be put back in. It's actually good that these features are missing initially because with all the feedback I'm starting to conceive of a good way to put some or all of those things back in without turning the page into a mess again.

Yes, some things have been overlooked, so do feel free to mention them, even if someone else already has. (There's a lot to parse through and hearing the same thing multiple times also helps to reinforce the thought of it.)

Fixed the "Just Published" link. Thanks for catching that.

@ChaosEngine - We could filter out any comments with just invocations. Perhaps I'll work on that. Interesting how differently everyone watches videos.

@Zawash - Thanks for the input. It's all helpful.

@eric3579 - I have a good idea how to add things like that back in.

@brycewi19 - We'll keep that in mind.

@oritteropo - Thanks for pointing that out and the details. It was only for posts with no votes at all. Fixed now.

@RFlagg - Will look into delaying the menus from appearing. Doesn't matter if you're breaking ground. Feel free to voice your thoughts so we know if there is more of a concensus about certain issues. Love the idea of showing who voted when hovering over the vote count...

Good point about NSFW being essential. Will add it back soon.

@blahpook - Thanks for catching that. I'll work on a fix.

@Esoog - Thanks for the detailed feedback. Good stuff to consider.

I like the top menu (the level where the Videosift logo is), it's nice. Can I suggest moving everything up there rightward so it's left alligned with where the video frame begins?

Also I like how you centred the video (got rid of stuff to the side of it) and made it larger. The centred-ness goes well with my OCD

As an idea for the side bar where you currently have Suggested/Related - how about possibly canning Suggested? I feel like Top, Unsifted, 'others in channel' encapsulates it already. How about instead having the following in a browser style tabbed menu (that wouldn't reload page when you select between them):

(1) Top, (2) Unsifted (expiring + beg), (3) Related, (4) Channel (maybe a filter that you select from a drop down of all channel from most popular to least), (5) Top Comments. You could re-use the buttons style you made for the old format for selecting "light/dark" or "newest/upcoming" but larger which would be good for TV/HTPC users.

Also for consistency, how about making that side bar identical in style to the items under the "Watch" menu up top? Actually, maybe only similar, with the same style but larger font and wider like they are now?

ant says...

How do we submit videos on the redesigned video web pages? Also, where are the channels? Did I miss them? For now, I opt out (how do I opt back in for later?)!

RedSky says...

Beta Opt In right of the video title in the old format.

ant said:

RedSky says...

For the frame below the video how about dividing it into like 4 cartesian style sections. The same as now, but making the entire frame a consistent size so the left and right side are the same height. The leftover space to the right of "submitted by ..." and the "... days ago" could be used for channel tags. You could let the video title stretch rightward further to prevent it clipping over to a new line (font size could be sized to avoid clipping based on video title maximum length).

Actually, I just noticed the video description as well. Perhaps apply the same philosophy of symmetry above but incorporate the video title somehow as well.

EDIT -

Okay how about a 3x2 frame. Those bottom top are now:

(left) video description, viewing: (list of names here)... [next line]
(right) voted up: ...., [next line] voted down: ....

Both left are right side are enforced to be the same size. The viewing, voted up and voted down are clickable items that will enlarge the list to include all names, pushing the frame beyond standard size length to show all names that apply to that list. Clicking again on them will reduce size of the frame back to standard. Similarly on the left size where, if the video description is too long, it is abridged with an 'expand' at the end.

Zawash says...

To optin and optout - just add ?vs6=optin or ?vs6=optout to any videosift link.

I miss the entire "my videosift" menu - my unsifted videos, my recently sifted videos, for not to mention the "submit a video" link.

And - for the video itself:
I miss not only the channels, but the tags as well - and I need the Edit This Video link - I suspect there are other admin links missing too, for those more privileged than this humble sifter.
The NSFW, Short, Long and Blocked are missing, along with the video length, who voted for/against the video, list of playlists the video is in, and links for administering the video in your own playlists.

The share icons are way too large - the channels should be there instead, big and enticing, to get sifters to explore the channels.

eric3579 says...

Please add the blocked tag back into the site. It was removed last round and its one of the most used invocations but lacking the tag. I'm sure the Canadians would appreciate it

mxxcon says...

I don't know if this is going to be beyond the scope of this redesign..

It always confused why we have "channels" and "tags", which are essentially the same thing. Can't we combine them from visual and functional point of view?

Maybe something similar to the way StackExchange handles things...Important tags(aka channels) would have icons and pre-written descriptions attached, otherwise it'll be regular tags. If possible tags will have counters to see how many other videos use it.

eric3579 says...

If tags and channels are the same ...you're doing tags wrong. That is kind of a problem on the sift. Many don't know how to do proper tags. Also many suck at channels but that's another issue entirely. Just another reason a sift wiki how to would be great. Now that would be quite the upgrade. Especially for new members.

Touche, i agree, but videosift is crazy complicated for any new user to understand completely. Even veteran users don't know how many things work. VideoSift is in no way an easy site to figure out, but i personally kinda love that.

The site channels and FAQ are now fully available within the header navigation, along with the Search function (which is under Watch).

Account preferences are also viewable and editable within the header, under your username which was added as a tab and when clicked that, it will take you to your profile.

Zawash says...

The top menu item in the About menu should be something explaining what the sift is, as the first item is the information shown when mouseovering the About icon.

oritteropo says...

On a phone, the new layout looks quite nice right until you get to the bottom, and then the related and suggested vids are quite messy.

Old style (neater list) - http://imgur.com/PkJe43M
New style (messier list) - http://imgur.com/4EBq4cS

You could neaten it up either by making the thumbnails smaller, or by only displaying three instead of five videos in each list. Actually the thumbnails seem quite large even on the desktop version.

As there is no way to mouseover on a phone, could the comment timestamps be made unconditional there (or everywhere)?

What makes me switch back and forth between v6 beta and old style is missing list of voters. I would've said number of views too, but I see that's been added (thanks!).

One usability thing - the way the comment box shrinks just before you want to hit submit means you have to chase the submit button around the page. This doesn't help. Moving the controls above the textbox would fix this, although I'm sure you can think of other ways.

I'd like to see Beggar's Canyon back in the "watch" menu, although I'm also open to only having it and deadpool and no thumbs appear only on the front page. It has been used a bit less lately, but as it was initially one of my favourite starting points I feel the need to stick up for it

Only on the front page? I assume the header and sub menu will be exactly the same for all pages. Correct me if im wrong @lucky760

Clearly. Those lists aren't clickable. They're just lists with titles.

Anyway, I used to regularly check "Top 15 Sifters of the Past Week" back in the days when I was regularly in the list. I think I just liked seeing my name up in lights. Might have motivated me to sift more. Maybe not. Maybe there are only ever 15 of us who check that list.

ChaosEngine said:

I don't think I've ever clicked on the top 15 sifters lists on the bottom.

Some things:

1. The length of a video affects whether I feel like watching it. I'd like to see the length (in parens) added after the title of each vid, or some other way of quickly seeing how long they are.

2. Lengths on the page itself are also really helpful when fixing dead links to know the odds you've got the right one.

3. I hate mouseover menus that pop up too easily (new ones seem to pop up instantly) and ones that don't go away easily (they have a disappear delay) or change easily (they have a change delay).

I'd like these timings to be opposite:
* mouseover menus should open only after a short delay (long enough for my mouse to pass over if it was going somewhere else);
* they should change instantly to the next menu when I mouseover the next heading; <---this one especially! and * they should all close instantly when my mouse goes below the menu or above the headings bar.

CrushBug says...

As has been said many times, the top menu mouseover needs a delay. I usually have a bunch of VideoSift tabs open and navigating around causes the menus to overlap the videos.

lucky760 says...

I've added a delay to the menus so they'll only appear if you pause your mouse over a tab.

@oritteropo - Thanks for reporting. Fixed the invocation pop-up.

@Hastur - Thanks for chiming in. Bookmark functionality is going to be restored.

blackfox42 says...

@lucky760 - further to the message I sent you, more testing has revealed that if I try and play any video from LiveLeak while opted in, I get the message "File not found or deleted!", but if I opt out it behaves and plays as normal

In the mouseover menus, when I hover, the menu pops up AND a little description text pops up. This text seems unnecessary as the menu is already open and the contents can hopefully speak for themselves. If it is necessary, as it stands, it's annoying that it overlays the content of the menu, particularly the Discuss menu where the text, "Community Discussion" covers up the top comment line.

lucky760 says...

It shouldn't be doing that. What browser?

Will there still be a way to embed sift videos and add videos to playlists?

Also access 'dead pool', 'thumbnails wanted', 'Awards' and 'top badges' pages?

All things i use or look at. Although i may be the only one.

lucky760 says...

@eric3579 - That's the first mention of playlists, which tells me the feature isn't being missed very much.

I think I may make all the other ancillary pages accessible via the member tab. (There's currently nothing there except your account preferences.)

FYI - If someone takes a look at the chat messages in the header siftbot will now note that fact within the lounge chat log.

Also the count of current chatters will get updated periodically, so if you're on a page for a while without reloading, the chat user count will continue to get updated.

eric3579 says...

Not so much referring to names of playlists listed under each video.

More interested in being able to add videos to my current playlist.

OK, then I'll second missing the playlists/other videos by XXXX at the bottom of the page. I have found many a video that way I never would have seen otherwise, and promoted some of them into the top 15 even though they might have been quite old.

EDIT: OK, not so much the playlists, more 'other videos by XXXXX'. I'm glad to see 'related videos' is still there.

I happened to click on "top users", and found that only the first entry on each page is displayed, whether logged in or out, but only if you've opted in to v6 beta.

I assume that's something to do with these changes?

Non members and not logged in members can see the chat lounge through the sub menu and obviously those are not logged into the sift lounge. I think that ability to view sift lounge through sub menu when not logged in should be removed.

* Also no 'update video thumbnail' on videos which need them

* No way of viewing the backups on a video and then changing embeds out.

Just adding things to the list as i see them Sorry Lucky, I know you are swamped.

I've only just now seen the new changes, so I haven't really had time to get an in-depth feel for what I like and/or don't like about it yet. I want to get over the "something is different - this is wrong"-phase before giving feedback, so it's not overly negative.

Just as an aside, I'm glad that the community is being heard on the redesign, so it can be catered to how the site is used rather than what you guys think we do.

I've added back in lots of functionality like the ability to edit videos, fix dead videos, view/activate backup embeds, display (prominently) if a video is dead, and created links for beggar's canyon, dead pool, thumbnails wanted, top users, awards, and top badges.

Most of those things now live under the member tab.

That's really good The previous member menu layout wasn't nearly as usable, and I'm VERY glad to see beggar's canyon linked.

Remaining things I'm still switching back and forth for are:

  • Number of votes of my current vids (the "My Unsifted Videos" pop-up doesn't seem to have a direct equivalent yet in v6 beta).
  • Adding vids to playlists.

Tags
I don't see them and the ability to change them. Not all sifts are tagged properly or well enough to, i assume, make videos easily found when searching for them. Also I often click on tags as a search mechanism.

ChaosEngine says...

While you're addressing issues...
It would be nice to have some way of seeing who up/downvoted a comment on a touch interface. You can hover with a mouse to see it, but there's no way to do that on a phone/tablet.

Not really sure how you'd solve it though.

eric3579 says...

The opt in and opt out buttons, easily accessible on each page, are extremely helpful for comparison and makes me much more willing to view, and attempt to more use/explore the new design. Good call Lucky

notarobot says...

Overall I like the layout. The hidden menus are slick. I'd like to see the voting buttons a smidge more prominent. I had to look around to find them (and did) but that something I was looking for. It should be super duper clear to a new user that this is an iterative site--to help get them engaged. I'd like to see the FAQ more prominent somehow.

And just as was already pointed out, tags? Where did they go? Are they off with the Channels enjoying a picnic? I can see neither.

gorillaman said:

You can't see a video's channels and tags on its page or who's voted for it.

kceaton1 says...

Basically I'll throw in my opinion, which is really just to parrot someone else's... I'm guessing me and @eric3579 have fairly close to the same layout--screen wise (size or perspective), resolution wise, and so on. Since I have the same issues and concerns eric has (like channels and other "inclusions" a video belongs in). Right now it is harder to find some of the details for the videos posted--or they need to be in a more simpler and easier to access spot (but, as noted--this may be due to a size/resolution issue; since I don't know if everything scales correctly yet); which makes me hesitant to make any changes to any videos. But, as noted (and as I found out later on) the opt-in opt-out buttons are found nearby, allowing me to figure out what I need to, until we decide on a fully finished product.

One question I might ask is, does the new site--as of right now--already scale correctly no matter what resolution you are at? So if you go WAY up into the "4K" range, will the site look really bizarre (I know that there will already be far more "space"; but, is it setup right now to arrange all the site items to display in their correct positions)? Inversely, for a long time cellphones were forcing site admins to create a mobile edition of their website(s); but, thanks to smartphones (plus their fast CPUs, and 1080p screens) this is being phased out.

Keep chomping at the bit @lucky760; I'm sure with our feedback and your willingness to get this finished so quickly will indeed help us get more than likely a bit of what we all want out of this (making the community as a whole basically happy with the finished product; and as mentioned, hopefully helping newer users). Keep up the good job.

lucky760 says...

I've added tags and channels back in.

I've had trouble trying to find a way to reinsert them in a subtle way that won't clutter the place up but will still be easily accessible.

After contemplating lots of options what I came up with was just putting them below the byline but minimally, with smaller text and semi-transparent until you hover over the video's meta info box.

Thoughts on my solution and other possible, possibly better solutions requested. (I'm not super-keen on what I came up with and wish there was something less messy.)

eric3579 says...

So today i checked out a brand new viral video site and realized one of the first things i wanted to do was search. Im always using search on reddit and yt. I really think its a necessity to have a search bar or icon permanently on the the top header and not in the sub menu. Especially for newer members who haven't figured out exactly how to get around the site. Search is always a go to i find when i visit a video site for the first time. I know what im getting when i do a search opposed to unfamiliar menus.

eric3579 says...

So i found where the backups are but when i click to view it, it opens the sifted video(not the backup) and the options is to replace current video with backup. No way of viewing backup first.

@lucky760 this is a bit weird. I'm not sure if this is how it's intended to be.

If, while on a permalink page, I hover over "Watch" and then hover over "Search", an advanced search window opens up in the top of the permalink page. I enter my search terms, and the returned results are contained within that top half window (example here). If I then select one of the results, I get a new permalink page opens within the top window (example here).

It appears you can keep opening windows within windows as much as you want. As soon as you move your mouse off the original top window everything disappears and you're left with the original permalink page you started with.

Although 'edit this video' is only viewable by video submitter (adding no clutter to the page for users) it would be better to put it on the video page. In no way is it obvious where it is now. But that's just me.

MilkmanDan says...

I opted back in and did a "standard sift watching session" for me of a few videos.

This time I forced myself to actually look for things that I noticed weren't in the places that I was expecting.

Some more thoughts:

I tried to figure out where to see "who voted for this video", currently under the comment entry box. I can't find that information in beta UI. I must admit that the current location isn't particularly logical, but I know to look for it there and I can't find it at all in the beta.

The "sidebar" content changed from Sift of the Week / Comment of the Moment / Leaderboard List (of whatever section you are currently in; Top New Videos, Top Videos Expiring Soon, etc.) to Suggested Videos and Related Videos. I think the old sidebar content was more likely to be relevant to what I want.

I get that that stuff has been moved into the header menus, but in my opinion it is harder to access there:
For beta - mouse to Watch button/menu, hover, mouse to relevant section like Top New Videos, mouse to which one I want
Old - mouse to what I want in the sidebar, which is probably already visible but not taking up TOO much screen real estate, and if it isn't visible it is a quick mousewheel jump away

In the meantime, the new sidebar makes stuff that I personally don't care about at all BIGGER. I don't understand what/who suggests the "Suggested Videos" and by what criteria they are deemed to be of interest to me, and "Relevant Videos" are mostly relevant in a long-timescale sense (ie., stuff from a single video series, containing same/similar tags, etc.) where on the sift a big part of the appeal is to vote on what is hot NOW. But those two things take up more space than the old sidebar that was filled with stuff that I *did* care about; they are now big thumbnails with a title underneath plus lots of spacing between list items compared to small thumbnail with title *beside* and very minimal extra padding/spacing between list items. So, the new sidebar has stuff I don't want to see, and spaces it out so that I have to scroll the mousewheel a lot more to get through it (even though it has fewer total list items than before!).

A big part of my personal enjoyment and engagement with the sift is video comments. I'm not a big fan of the beta font for comments, but I think I could potentially get used to it. But more important than the font is that it seems like each comment gets less total screen real estate, and there is more padding/space between each comment AND the sidebar.

I'd like to see that spacing/pad cut down to more like the old style. Beyond that, I figure it is safe to assume that you're not interested in bringing the old sidebar content back (Sift of the Week / Comment of the Moment / Top X Videos) from its beta location in the menubar. Assuming that that will stay there, I'd *much* rather see comment boxes that take up the majority of the page width with NO sidebar. Old sidebar and old style comments would be my personal choice, but assuming that isn't going to happen, I just feel like the beta sidebar is unnecessary and massively oversized / overspaced.

So, I gave it another shot ... back to opting out for me for now.

lucky760 says...

Not necessarily. There have been tons of suggestions and complaints and I've tried to loosely keep track (mostly mentally) of changes I need to make.

I'd like to see the list of who voted for a video.
When I click on a video, it pops into a bigger that I usually watch' mode. Too big.. I actually like the name of the video to be on top of the video, not below like now, but that's just a matter of getting used to here I guess.

Stuff on my sidebar 'newest submissions' and 'top 15' are quite big. They are almost as big as the comment boxes.. maybe make them a bit smaller?

Just a bit confusing, but like I said, I just came and saw this for the first time. You guys must have had tons of hours put into this, and I really appreciate the love and care you put to VS!

I don't come here often enough these days to be helpful in commenting or offering suggestions.

Think a search bar would benefit the new design. Every other video site ive checked so far has this feature in the left hand upper area. It's kind of an internet thing with video sites. To not have it seems like someone forgot to include it or it's just not available (is what id think if another video site did not have it).

Also it seems like many sifters also think we could use it by all the upvotes on the quoted comment.
