The Purpose of the "*discard" Command
I tried to submit a video to this blog, but I think the submission did not take because the vid was already discarded. I have a question though -- the video was discarded for no reason I could determine, it wss neither a dupe nor snuff nor porn. It's possible the discarder (who was NOT the submitter of the vid) found it offensive and discarded on those grounds. However, the discarder is also a notorious downvoter, so the situation has me wondering exactly what the limits of "discard" should be. I'm do not know if the function was used in this case as a sort of super-mega-downvote, or if there was good reason for the discard.
My real question is, though, what are the limitations/parameters on using discard? Can I discard any video I wish? Or should it be limited to those vids that are counter to VS policy? The specific vid in this case was the cheerleader who had the mishap in the parking lot -- no rules broken from what I can tell.

Any gold-star 'sifter can star-discard any video, whether they should or not is another question entirely. What was the video in question? Can you give the URL?
I hope that gold-star invocations aren't being abused- it's part of the oath to only use our powers for good!
hmmm.. it's still in the system

oh i see, the comments are there, on THAT page. oops.
i think my biorhythms are off today or something. shoot me, someone, please.
OK, I found a new video source - but I don't see an edit button for me to change the link. Perhaps a goldie needs to *save the video? I don't even see the video in my list of submitted videos (I think I should se my submissions even if self discarded).
Yeah, discard eliminates the vid from your submission stream. We're waiting for our over-worked system administrators to develop a *merge command which will make the kind of thing you're hoping to do even easier.
Until then, I recommend re-posting the video if it's been discarded.
sfjocko, is your video the same one gaffa posted?

I've also seen others discard vidoes with explinations - unless it is a self discard.
Untill we have a merge command, we should post a warning that the video is dead to allow the original submitter a few hours to find a new link. And I do try to use something other than youtube to source the videos.
If the video isn't resubmitted, you can always ask dag or James to do the edit for you if you can't find someone to run a star-save on it.
Generally speaking people *should* include an explanation unless it's blatantly obvious why a dicard is being pulled. Hmm. If you see it happening more point it out.
FYI, I see a previous discussion (for 14 days ago) about the idea of giving people the chance to fix broken link. http://www.videosift.com/blog/story.php?id=9011
Looks like sfjocko may have submitted a replacement. Without the new merge command, resubmitting won't get the votes of the original one.
On the 40th anniversary of ST:TOS I say, "It's dead"
dotdude, i was talking about gaffa's video the whole time. it wasn't about any of "my" videos.
A suggestion for a new command *dead puts the submission in a list and folder of dead submissions so the submitter (or siftbot if not dealt with by the original submitter in a 'timely' manner) can find and correct the broken embedded link.
I like that idea Gaffa... so if anywhere in the 80+ videos I have, if something comes up in the dead column, I can go back and see if I can find it again to correct the vid... Very smart & very useful!
