Sifty why don't you remember me

I finally decided to post a question that has been bugging me for years.
Why can't videosift remember me for more than two weeks.
I have to log on to this site soo often. Not more than once a day or week, but still so many times. It is annoying more so now because of the crazy page layout you get if you are not logged in. Before it was annoying because you only found out when voting or commenting.

Does not happen for me on other sites.
I switched to Chrome a couple of months ago, before that Firefox had the same issue (and again only on this site).

When I look at my cookies, there is a VideoSiftSession cookie (along with many others) that is expiring on May 29 (I have now logged on again), but I am sure videosift will have forgotten about me by then (in fact, I think I logged in three times this week).

I use http://videosift.com/ as my bookmark, so I don't think it is like a standard redirect bug.

I don't think my complaint about VideoSift not keeping logged in information is the same as people complaining about crappy Internet connections on Airplanes.

Cookies have been around since 1994, this is not some newfangled technology web programmers are still getting the hang off...

I have my browser set to clear cookies on exit, so have to log in every time I do that... but that's my choice.

If you bookmark the login page can you get your browser to provide your credentials? If not, a page where you can might be a good enhancement to request.

Couple of things. First, we used to have a cookie lifetime of two weeks. That's since been increased by much more, like beyond a year. For example, my cookie also expires in May, but of 2013. Are you sure your cookie expiration isn't 2013?

Second, I can't really think of a reason that you might get logged out, except if you upgrade your browser. The reason for this is there's a security precaution in place that in part uses your browser's user agent to ensure you're the rightful owner of the cookie.

Is anyone else experiencing these issues? I never have to log back in whether in Firefox, Chrome, or Safari, except after upgrading.

It doesn't happen that often for me. I have my browser (Firefox) remember logins and passwords (and use a master password). When it does happen though, the standard login screen that you get doesn't play nice with Firefox, but I discovered that right clicking the login "button" and opening it in a new window gives me a page that does work with Firefox.

Are you using any addons that might be clearing your cookies? The last time I played with Firefox's private browsing mode, when switching back to normal mode I had to log back in to every site that uses cookies to remember me. I don't use the private browsing mode because of that.

Indeed, 2013. When was the lifetime changed from 2 weeks to a year?

You use the user agent, like the full user agent including version number? Doesn't Chrome autoupdate all the time? Anyway, I am a pretty plain browser user, I am pretty sure that I only log in on Videosift on my own computer, and only through Chrome, without any special cookie settings, but autoupdate is on in it.

I don't know if the code monkeys changed something, but when I visited VideoSift for the first time today I wasn't logged in. It must have been a while since it last happened because the non logged in page looks way different than I remember.

You just can't let it go can you ;-)

Here's how I use videosift. I open the homepage, then open all videos I want to check out in new tabs. So then I have like 10 tabs open, the result of a selection process.

It is only then that I discover that I am not logged in, and then I have 10 tabs open without me being logged in, and having to log on on every page. Plus, even though the login process is partly Ajax, it is not all Ajax, so you should not attempt to log on when the video is playing, because then it will reload the page. It is frigging annoying, and this is not rocket science to implement.

Happened to me earlier like it did to Sarzy.
Took me a whopping six seconds to enter my info.

I was wondering if it might be a Facebook thing. Are all you folks who have these troubles connected to VideoSift via Facebook?

I've noticed that when I'm connected via FB, every few hours, when I load VideoSift, the page fully loads then almost immediately reloads to re-connect to Facebook.

Is that what's happening to you?

sanderbos says...

Can't be facebook for me, since I don't use that. Not logged into facebook, and I have a regular account (it is probably a very old account, if there is anything special about it, I think I joined pretty early).

One month one week later:
Guess what, I am still logged in! I am pretty sure I have not logged in since I posted this, and if so then I am very sure that this is the longest time I have ever been logged in.
Was something changed technically? If so please keep that change!

Thanks,

Sander.
