Rules for submitting new vids

OK, I'm just requesting some clarification here. In the old days, a few months ago, postings were unlimited. Then for multiple reasons the rules were changed to 2 posts per person per 24 hours. Now it seems it is 3 posts per person per 24. However, I often notice that although more than 24 hours have passed since I posted my second- or third-to-last video, I still cannot post a new one.

I've been trying to figure out if there is some other pattern time restriction, but I can't figure it out. Here's my current example:
my last three posts were -

18 hours and 10 minutes ago
1 day 21 hours ago

and I still get the message that posts are limited to 3 within 24 hours, and am not able to post. Am I missing something? Or is this more of a tech glitch?

I concur with your observation, sfjocko. Couple of days ago I submitted 3 videos within a short time, and then 2 whole days later I was still being given the 3 videos/24 hours spiel. Whazzup with that?

I think it's based on the publish date as opposed to the submit date. I will check though. We've been meaning to look at this rule. Now would be as good a time as any to put it out there.

On the one hand, as a community we don't want to discourage strong participation - on the other hand we don't want the queue flooded, so that finding the good stuff is needle-in-a-haystack hard. We'd like to get input on the best way to reach this balance. At the moment we have around 80 videos in the queue - I don't think it's practical to go much beyond that. It's onerous to have to sift through more than 80 videos.

Agreed. I usually won't go past the third or fourth page. Also, I'm noticing that the site is getting a bit "bandwaggony", by which I mean that the same vids are popping up as the new hot vids on all the sites - ifilm, google, etc. so that I can be pretty sure when I see, say, iFilm's new hot vids that those vids will also be posted here. It's not necessarily bad, since in theory the best will be "sifted up". Perhaps what's needed is an archiving system based on tags/votes -- but that's another discussion.

Another issue, since you opened it up, are the serial postings. While I like them, I'm not sure what to make of all the (and this is just an example) M Python postings. The fourth or fifth one starts to feel like filler, or that they should all be considered ONE posting, or ... (I really have no solution, just commenting).

But I do think one thing that could make an ultimate difference is to develop a good archival/retrieval system, aside from just the tags. That could add a lot of value to the the collection as well, since it would be a more browsable repository of video clips that could be viewed in some order other than when it was posted. Easy for me to say... though I do not know exactly what makes a good archival/retrieval system. And of course, that may not be your intentions at all. (though i guess i'm imagining something like what fedquip has going on at taytv.com)

Is this the right place to have this discussion?

Do you mean having categories? Or maybe being able to mark things as favourites? I'm not sure what a good archival retrieval/system is either. Search works for me about 75% of the time when I'm looking for something in particular.

I like tags. One thing we could do to make them better is to open up tagging videos to the community, so we could all add our own tags to a video.

If the top 15 of us submitted three videos each day, that would be 45 in the que daily. But there are a lot more of us than just 15. Summer may mean additional participants since some folks are not in school. The growth of membership and videos is going to mean more constraints.

Maybe the limit of 2 will need to be reintroduced. Maybe the time in the que will need to be reduced. Maybe a cap on the number of videos are in the que will encourage more aggressive voting up or down.

As for the tagging discussion, I would like to suggest an increase in the maximum for tags. There have been times when I wanted to have more than the limit because of what was in a video. This might help in tracking videos down and encouraging folks to better label what is submitted.

I am sucker for Monty Python sketches, but there are other comedy troops and individuals out there. I had completely forgotten about “The Two Ronnies” – although I don’t remember where or when I used to watch them eons ago.

Whatever y’all decide, don’t turn this into a drudgery yourselves. I’m reminded of restaurant in Algiers Point (across the river from the French Quarter) - it closed because it became too successful.

Anyway, I need to quit thinking so I can wind down this annoying artist mind of mind . . .

It's still very much a labour of love dotdude, no drudgery. (except maybe for IP banning but there's only been 3).

But we are looking for ways to empower everyone in the community to shape VS in a way a static site can't be shaped.

A dynamic limit would be good Krupo, but I don't like the idea of things escaping after 2 votes. At the moment, we have a semi-dynamic queue escape value. It's 4 overnight in the US, and goes up to 5 during the day.

Regardless, we don't want to take ourselves too seriously. VS feeds my TV addiction. I know people don't like the word "addiction" used frivolously, but for me, I think it is an addiction. When I sit down and let an inane sitcom wash over me- my heart rate slows and I'm blissed out for the duration.

As a kid - the TV was always on. I associate the M*A*S*H theme song with dinner, because it was in syndication at 6PM for years while I was growing up. If I hear the tune now, I start to slobber.

I have my own kids now, and we've ditched the TV, but the cravings are still there.

This sucks. Maybe it's my competitive nature, but I still can't post anything despite having only one vid submitted in the past 24 hours. And I get to watch my fellow videosifters post the vids I've had all ready to submit, just waiting for the green light....

Krupo says...

Actually the dynamic limit I referred to wasn't refering to escape to fromt page, I meant the "# of vids you can post" limit. If the queue is only 2 or 3 pages long, you can maintain a full-size limit.

If the queue balloons up (5, 8, 10 pages), cut back on the daily posting limit, kind of like closing a floodgate... make sense?
