Obama is Selling You Out?

This is George from inflation.us and he has a message for Democrats. He also seems to be a bit tipsy in this video.

I also hope you enjoy my Fox News title above. It would be a statement except I added a question mark, so it has the illusion of being a fair and balanced question.

Here's what George from inflation.us wrote on his YouTube page:

Think the Teabaggers Are Crazy Now? Just Wait.

If the above referenced Daily Kos article is anywhere near to what some of you are thinking about what we are thinking... Heaven help all of us....
We don't hate Obama because he is Black, we don't hate sick people. We have compassion. We want this country to work again and any fool can see it is broken. The Washington DC cesspool is not the answer....self sufficiency, self reliance, community cooperation, small businesses...these are the things that need to start working again...

If you think all this fuss is over the "public option" you are missing the point....the Second American Revolution is coming... I will be standing on the right side of history

Yes.

Get the government out of the way, and prices will go down? Since when?

Pharmaceutical drugs in Canada are cheaper because the government regulates their prices. Drugs are more expensive in the States because they aren't regulated.

Pharmaceuticals are very much regulated. The FDA chooses which drugs can and cannot be sold in the States. We could purchase the same drugs the pharmaceutical companies ship to Mexico (or wherever) for much much less, but our own government regulation prohibits those drugs from being imported back into our country at the lower cost.

Soooo...wouldn't it make sense for the Government to regulate the price of drugs in the United States? or do you condone price gouging?

NetRunner says...

No, Obama isn't selling me out.

And yes, these people must be marginalized, preferably by people within their own movement who realize that incitement to violence, feeding paranoia, and stoking racial animosity can and will backfire horribly.

If you guys are so anti-war, why are you so fired up to start one on American soil, waged against your fellow Americans?

They're currently regulating the costs, because they're manipulating the market. By them not allowing the same drugs the corporations export for less money to be imported for less shows they're helping to manipulate the price.

Wouldn't it be better if those who need medication could import it from Mexico without the FDA stopping them... and effectively killing them?

longde says...

The rich will sit there and take it because doing business in this country is the easiest in the world. Where the fuck are they going to go?

What a naive fool. No regulation? Get fucking real. The reason the economy is in this mess is because of deregulation and lack of oversight of the banking industry, derivatives industry and the mortgage bond raters.

We have witnessed in the last eight years the spigot of free markets and deregulation cracked open a trickle, and these fools have abused every drop of freedom they got. What will happen if there is a full release? Do we really want to be a third world country?

This vlogger doesn't care because he thinks he'll end up in the upper crust if there ever was a libertarian revolution. I call this the "little 'g' god delusion".

In the Netherlands the progressive income tax results in 52% tax on all income above € 54,776 ($80,635). And yes, the rich people prefer sitting there and living in the Netherlands over moving to other countries.

I'm confused. How could it possibly be a good thing for a country to export a drug to Mexico, then have it shipped back into the US? Why is it cheaper in Mexico in the first place? If it is because the Mexicans can't afford to pay the same costs as people in the US, then re-importing drugs would only serve to drive up prices in Mexico until they were the same as here, thus depriving Mexicans from their benefits.

How did the price difference come about in the first place? That would be the place to start looking to fix the problem.

Right. It started with government and corporate collusion.

The FDA regulations stifle competition in the Pharmaceutical marketplace, and the costs of US pharmaceuticals is way higher than need be because of this. Mexico doesn't have these kinds of restrictive import laws, therefore they can accept cheaper manufactured drugs from anywhere in the world, thus the US Pharmaceutical companies must compete for the business which drives the cost of medication down. That's why it's cheaper there.

Conversely our FDA restrictions drive up cost in our marketplace. It would be cheaper for us to purchase our pharmaceuticals from Mexico, but that would interfere with Corporate profit margins, therefore it's simply not allowed.

MaxWilder says...

So you're saying that in Mexico, drug prices are cheaper because other companies ignore patents and simply manufacture whatever they want and sell it. Essentially destroying any chance a pharmaceutical company has to recoup its R&D expenses. I'm not a big fan of big pharma in any way, but that sounds like a reaaaaly bad idea. We want to encourage research, not remove all motivation. Here they have a certain number of years before generics can copy drugs, thus giving companies some time to recoup investment and establish a brand name. At least that's how I was told it works. It sounds pretty reasonable, why isn't it working?

volumptuous says...

Yes, FDA approvals and restrictions are broken and need to be fixed. But throwing out the concept of an FDA is ridiculous and dangerous to the health of the citizenry. Same with the EPA. Once collusion is involved, of course the agency is going to fail. But if run properly, it's an incredibly valuable tool in our democratic arsenal. FEMA can do awesome things, but put some heckuva-Brownie's in charge and its an unmitigated disaster.

Just as most libertarians (I am assuming) would agree that a federal military is useful and effective when not abused, but if corrupt motherfuckers use it for nation-building and natural resource stealing and illegal occupations does not mean we should do away with a military entirely.

Making an agency fail through corruption and collusion, then pointing at that failure so you can dismantle it or argue against it, is disingenuous.
