(Mis/Ab)use of *related invoke
Unless I'm completely misunderstanding it's intention, I think VideoSift need to educate its members on the proper use of *related invoke.
Too often I see idiotic things like http://videosift.com/video/Its-a-Wonderful-Life-Bridge-Scene#comment-1625506 and http://videosift.com/video/A-fast-and-funny-way-to-put-on-a-swim-cap#comment-1620316
This site has 2 different ways to groups videos: "Channels" and "Tags".
If you want to link 2 videos together based on the common topic, use channels and/or tags.
If 2 videos are literally related, ie 2 parts of an interview or a full episode and a short clip, use related invocation.
But don't use *related because 2 videos just happen to have a fucking bridge in them!
Another example are "True Facts" videos. They should not be marked as related. When you submit videos they should have proper tags and channels so that I can click on http://videosift.com/tag/zefrank or http://videosift.com/tag/true+facts and find all of them.

I know it's a big issue that threatens the very existence of this site, however, in your "idiotic" link posted here:
http://videosift.com/video/A-fast-and-funny-way-to-put-on-a-swim-cap#comment-1620316
I already explained there that, first off nothing happened. Nothing could happen. No post was linked as being related. Pretty obvious. And second off, you really need to calm down, get a sense of humor and maybe try to not be so rude. I understand that abusing invocations is an issue. So is abusing people.
Not everything is about you, take your own advice.
words words words
Also, I just want to bring up another blight dooming this site. Not every sift that has a person with a canadian accent belongs in the canada channel. Not every sift that has a woman in it is femme (even if she's hot, sorry). I could go on all day about channel assignments. Asia? Nope. Sorry, just because there's an asian person doesn't mean it goes there. Celtic? Same thing. British? You guessed it. There's thousands of mis-channeled sifts like this. Where's the freakout? There is way more fuckup imo on channels and tags than there is on invoking (or not invoking) related.
oh and *quality
Because we all know it happens TOO much but no one really says anything.
It is not an action taken without repercussion, one small sample would be the fact you get rewarded for doing the wrong thing. If you use the related command you get a logged action that counts towards a " thingymabober " on your profile, the relatividy .. badge ? is it a badge ?
I personally see it as a cheater way to get a badge, although really.. I do understand it is a graphic on my screen and really holds no value what so ever. Those harmless ignorant related commands actually do get you something when you do not deserve it. Kind of like blind pque upvoting, one person ruined that for everyone I think ( or maybe it was flawed to begin with). I would hate to see that happen with the related command.
SO THERE !
Awarding mxxcon with one star point for this contribution to VideoSift - declared quality by Mobius.
I personally think the true facts related videos is exactly what related was created for. I do however see that the related video is sometimes abused. Maybe @lucky760 or @dag could provide some clarity on how related should be used.
Oh and dont get me started on the crazy abuse of the channel invocations. It's an absolute clusterfuck.
-edit-
from the 5.0 release siftalk - "We've added a new invocation called *related. It's very simple to use. If you find a VideoSift post (and by post I mean video, Sift Talk, or blog post) with content that is related to another post, just invoke related like this: *related=http://videosift.com/video/Crystal-Blue-Persuasion"
So its pretty wide open on what can be considered related. Maybe we could come up with a more defined definition.
Mobius why are you harassing me now privately and on my profile?

This is exactly what I mean by abusing people here.
THIS is what abuse of this site looks like:

Abuse ? you' re calling that abuse ?
I edited my comment so it would take up your screen so you would have to delete it. What I was going to write was abuse, That is why I stopped myself.
You are a whiner, I really don't get along with whiners, and now that I know you are one I'll just plop you on ignore like I am sure you have done to me.
This trying to publicly shame a person is pathetic on your part, i'll admit some of what I did was juvenile ( fun ) but calling that abuse is just wrong. You are wrong.
Wrong Wrong wrong.
Now lets get back on topic !
I think Eric cleared that up pretty nicely. It is open, VERY open to interpretation, I was interpreting *related wrong.
I learned two things today !
Harassing another member through private comments is abuse. And people have been banned for it. The fact that you were trying to force me to delete your previous private comments to me just shows how wrong you were. Feel free to try to change the topic. I'm not publicly shaming you, you SHOULD be ashamed. And I'm not going anywhere. You've acted like a bully and an asshole and I'm not putting up with it.

I just understood it to be a manual way to tell siftbot to put a video in the "related" vids box at the bottom... and since the toaster already puts in some quite unrelated vids at times, a few strays probably don't matter much.
So based on that, I have no problem at all with part two of something being listed as related to part 1, and two vids that had nothing in common except both featuring a bridge could already have been considered related by the toaster, so although I would never put in that link myself it's probably not the end of the world.

It's not the end of the world. But what's the point of having those features if they are not going to be used properly and become useless?

Well I am rather optimistically assuming that if people bother to put in a related link at all, that it will be because the toaster did a poor job, and that whatever they add will be better.
It would be possible to put only unrelated links, but then, similar abuse of other site features has led to bans or loss of privilege in the past, so it's not as if nothing can be done.
In any case, we will soon see. The feature has been around a while now, and people seem to be getting a little bit used to it.

back on the subject of channel abuse -- it should be up to channel owners to rectify and I guess not all of them check their domains very often
I totally agree.

Oh you kids. I used to be like you and care about things.
Just use your brain when invoking things and putting stuff into channels. If you feel, "yeah it should go in that channel" then it probably does need to go in it - only a few channels make no damn sense, but that's a different discussion.
Videos with women doing women things go in femme, asians doing asian thngs go in asia (and usually wtf), dashcam video 9 times out of 10 go into russia. It's easy.
Does jumping from a bridge and dropping boulders from a bridge relate to each other?

I see the joke in there, but no, I don't think those are related. That's one of the cases where you should embed the other post in a comment instead.
