One of the better moves Avatar made, was to basically reveal the plot in the trailer.
I went to the movie with the general outline of the plot in mind, and thus the "meh, I've seen this before" feeling was lessened.

I think when you're making the worlds first VR/3D film it pays to have a solid storyline to fall through, even when it happens to be a rehash of the above.

I think the man was worried about the technical aspect more.

When someone hands you 350+ million to make a movie, I doubt it's because you told them you where trying something bold, fresh, edgy, dark, and challenging in this day and age.

But blue digital butts with tails??! GO FOR IT!!!

Ironically, an original franchise with weird looking blue aliens filmed with untested technology for ridiculous amounts of money was exactly the bold, fresh, edgy and challenging kind of filmmaking that no production company dared to finance. Despite Cameron's track record, it was still notoriously difficult for him to find the money, and Fox eventually stepped in only when two other companies agreed to share the risk.

What I'm saying is the movie has a very safe plot, but my digital butt comment was to say exactly what you did - that they everyone was a-ok (eventually) with going full out on new technology. In that area yes, Cameron went into some bold, fresh, new, etc etc territories.

We're pretty much in agreement.
