Hotness Listing Feedback

Well, it's been a couple of days since our last tweaks to the default front page "Hotness" listing and it seems to be working pretty fantastically, in this reporter's unbiased opinion.

The listing is constantly fresh with only truly Hot videos remaining on the front page any longer than any others, so it's running with a good turnaround rate and most all the content listed is well worth watching.

So, I'm wondering: What do you think of the listing's refresh rate and content quality? How often do you view the Hotness listing?

Thanks for your input, Sifters.

I am a long time proponent of the "hot view" we tried it back in the day and got shot down. So glad it is here to stay and is meeting with roughly 1/1000000th the backlash, ve must change to grow yah?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

It may be that the default hot view becomes the "casual visitor" mode - I seem to be flip-flopping to both. I used the hot tab to find where the action was, the hotness view serves the same purpose for me.

^ I mentioned that in the other 3.2 post. Settings don't appear to be sticking ... whenever I first login at home or from work for they day I have to reset my width and reselect newness (my default preference though I will occasionally check the hotness)

I don't like Hotness as the default for channels at all--mostly because it leads to a very truncated list.

Also, for the general pool, if all used hotness, no unsifted videos would ever show up, because newly submitted videos are only hot once someone who has it sorted by "newness" looks at it.

IMO - I found many videos on the first page that were not consider quality content by sift members. Look at member votes/member views. A few examples: 7/17, 7/22, 8/18, 3/8, 7/27, 5/12, 6/35, 7/19. If 35 sifters watched a video and only 6 voted for it, how is that quality content or hot. I think the ratio of these numbers is the best way to find quality content for unsifted videos. Im curious to know what formula your using to find the hot videos.

Completely valid point, eric. I just made a change that will factor in the votes:views ratio when determining hotness.

It will take a little while for the change to propagate through the hot listing, but let's see if it looks any better once it does.

As for how exactly hotness is determined, it's a combination of many factors, but we won't divulge so no one has any advantage in trying to get their own vid up higher in the list. Trade secret.

Ok, forgive me but I still don't understand.

A video gets submitted. It's hot. It goes to the front (hotness) page.

What happens when it gets ten votes? It goes back to the top of the page?

I would test this with my own videos but no one ever votes for them.

As I said here, I don't understand how this is supposed to work. Now we have unsifted content, right on the front page. WTF? Doesn't that just defeat the whole purpose of having a queue? I don't get it at all.

Whatever you guys are trying to do with the "hot" page, I dont get. From James comment "we must change to grow", Dags comment "I used the hot tab to find where the action was", and unsifted video ratios that are insanely bad (4/32, 8/34, 2/14,....), I can only come to the conclusion that this page is directed at videos that somehow create more traffic to VS, and not about quality sifts. Of course I could be totally wrong about all of this, but when things are considered "trade secrets" its hard to know what you guys are thinking.

By the way VideoSift is still by far the best video site on the web. I thank you for providing me a place on the internet that I lovingly call my home.

This hotness crap sucks. Keep it off the front page, all I see now is a ton of shitty videos there all the time. Stuff with two votes there looks ridiculous. The whole point of the site is to see the best internet videos out there. Newbies coming to the site will now have a different perception.

Sorry but I don't get it and I don't like it. This is comming from someone who almost consistently checked this site every day since 2006.

*update* I finally figured out about the stupid newness button at the bottom, never saw it and never heard about it until I read this post. I sound like an old conservative geezer but I don't think it should be default.

Well, if it's a more popular site for first time visitors you're looking for, then the default hotness is just perfect. I'll have to agree with eric3579 however, that this feature is not necessarily about featuring quality videos, but popular vids. The 'Hot'-button seemed to work just fine, why suddenly change it to be the default homepage for this site? It just seems strange from a community point of view.

Incorrect. A submitted video is not automatically hot and thus it does not go to the front (hotness) page.

>> What happens when it gets ten votes? It goes back to the top of the page?

Total vote count (wrt published/unpublished) does not affect a video's hotness, so it does not bring it to the top of the hotness listing.

>> I would test this with my own videos but no one ever votes for them.

I know how you feel.
