Give your comma key a fucking rest!

Seriously, people, put the keyboard down and walk away. I don't know why this trend started a few months ago, but commas in tags are for separating terms, not every word.

If you find you've tagged something "the", "and", "be" or "to" then you're doing it wrong. "Richard" and "Dawkins" should not be 2 separate tags. "Jimmy" and "Carr" should not be 2 separate tags.

We don't want a Richard Dawkins video to match a Richard Pryor video. We don't want a Jimmy Carr video to match a Jimmy Carter video. This is exactly what happens when you type "richard, dawkins" rather than "richard dawkins" or "jimmy, carr" rather than "jimmy carr".

Also, tags should not be the title repeated with commas inserted. "give, your, comma, key, a, fucking, rest" would not be appropriate tagging of this post if it were a video. Each term should be related to the post on its own. Something like "comma, tagging, tags" is completely adequate. You don't have to use the entire 80 characters and more is not necessarily better, especially when it means adding inaccurate terms.

*Quality. People have been over-comma-ing tags for the entire time I've been a member here, so it's certainly been longer than a few months. There's been at least one sift talk post about it, if not more. I actually went in and tried to edit them at first, but then I realized that it was a futile gesture.

Tags are search terms. They have to be clickable and make sense. It's possible to use most of the title for it, if you're uncreative, but the commas still have to be the right places.

If you have room, feel free to make "fun tags" too, but only if you have room.

Certain words from the title, yes. Again, using the title of this post as an example, "comma","commas","comma key","tags","tagging" and so forth would all be good tags. "your","a", and "fucking" would not be the least bit beneficial and "rest", or "key" by itself, are questionable.

I was compulsively editing them, usually a dozen or so a day, until I lost gold in the 4.0 switch. Now I just look and seethe.

I'm glad someone said it. I hate those kinds of tags.

Added fun - while adding tags, don't bother using spaces in between terms - siftbot (or whoever really runs this place) does away with spaces between tags anyways.
