Change Request: Remove profile posts from public feeds

Thanks to the enormous bru-ha-ha over one user's comment on another user's profile being read by a third user via the discussions/latest comment panel I propose that all profile comments are removed from public streams.

I don't feel that one user commenting directly to another user via their profile should be spread around the site for all to see, it makes little sense from a community perspective. What interest in these comments should people actually have?

I can't make this a poll, but could people weigh in here with whether they have any issue with this being implemented, because I can't see any reason to not remove these comments from all public streams at all.

I don't think it solves anything if it's just a filter option, as the default would still be to see them, so that 99.99% of people would see them.

I think just... nothing from profiles.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I like this feature the way it is. It's like a party where side conversations may be going on, that you can listen to or potentially join - but if people want to make it private they can step into a room (go private)

Why let a single incident dictate a massive change like this.

^ that's why I'm saying that there should be the option (the option, not the norm) to filter things out as the default if we want to. Maybe an option in the account preferences so that each user can change the recent comments section the way they want instead of changing or not changing things for all users.

(if it is not difficult to implement of course).

I didn't think it was a big change, as I guess, I never saw why people would actually want to read other people's posts on other's profiles.

I underestimated the voyeuristic tendencies of some of the sifters! And seeing as one of those voyeurs is the creator... I guess that overules

I rarely read PM messages if I look at recent comments and would welcome the option to filter them out. But only to filter them. I agree that one spat should not change what seems to have been working just fine for a long time.

The ultimate solution is go tick the private box as Dag says. Also if a comment did rile someone then it's still only going to be a matter of time before it's found or passed on. Removing them might not have prevented BT from calling a siftquisition.

Such a change would probably diminish the community chatter and feel of the site.

I like how we're all so upset about BT's siftquisition, and yet this it like the 4th thread to pop up as a result of it. I agree with Dag. Let's not get all upset and change the way the Sift works because of one incident. I may be biased, though, because I don't ever look at the recent comments.

Well, I have mixed feelings about this. Let me give a few incoherent things that are true about having seen profile comments in the comments threads:

1. It contributed to my feeling of alienation in terms of there being a sift in-crowd, because I became aware of vast circles of mutual up-vote chains where people noted going through each others queues and voting madly. Strangely enough, this didn't make me feel good about puting effort into finding things for VS.

2. It's been quite entertaining to me during odd moments of procrastination, and it helped me notice odd videos I might have missed otherwise (some of which I promoted).

3. It's clued me in to various factions/rivalries on VS that I would never have noticed otherwise.

I'm not sure if these things are mostly good or mostly bad. I guess, in some sense, I would miss it. I mean, as it is there is a mechanism for keeping profile comments private, and people can use it if they like, so I don't feel the need for the change, but I say that knowing it sounds odd given my point 1 above. I mean, it happens. My knowing about it is just secondary.

Spoco, at first I was with you here, but that's what the "private" box is for. That's the sub rosa variable when we want to talk to somebody in private, or exercise our right to be a drunken idiot.

It is kind of fun to "over hear" what other people are talking about.
