Badge Idea

Hey kids,

how about a badge for early adopters?
I think if you are one of the first (maybe in the first 10) to upvote a clip which later becomes successful you should earn some recognition for that.
Other values that badge could take into account for calculation is an upvote of a clip "before it hits the hot list" or "before it gets 100 votes" or something like that.

Whatchallthink?

There's already the 'assister' badge, which I think is awarded if you promote and/or quality a video before it's sifted. I think that's good enough, and involves some effort and spending of powerpoints.

A badge for simply voting would see people end up with ridiculous levels of those badges. It's kinda rewarding people for doing the most basic thing on the site.

... saying that, anything to get people visiting the unsifted section more is a Good Thing™, I'm just not sure this is the solution.

My 2 cents.

Agreed with hybrid.

In my own words though, you would be patting a person on the back for doing what the site it about. I think this has been brought up before though, as these words feel too familiar.

I really like the idea. @lucky760 and I were discussing something very similar recently. There are definitely Sifters who put in the time to find those gems in the queue that would otherwise fall through the cracks - and they should be rewarded.

Reddit has this informal culture of " the Knights of New" (I love this cartoon - so applicable to VideoSift too) - it would be neat to take this idea and formalise it more so these good people get the recognition they deserve with a badge.

BoneRemake says...

Explain the idea more please. I am against it, but I want to understand why you think its a good idea.

When I see this I imagine all the shitty cat videos or Fiery hot topics ( news/current events) giving people what they do not deserve, how would a person set a guideline to that ? I would think you can not specify which style of video gets you a page point but the basic numbers would. I would like to know MOARRRRR ! !

*Edit- WHat I mean by "do not deserve " is my self inflicting high standard for a videos General quality : to how many votes it gets. A cat or dog or moose doing something funny is good for a laugh but it doesn't really hold any other merit other than that. I like to think the Cream of the crop should get rewarded for its substance. Although some people put a high priority on such things as "cute" and "adorable " . As for fiery hot topics I mean peoples emotional connection to things like Occupy wall street, the middle east, wars etc. that is a little harder to define for me but I see that as a bandwagon effect, EVERYONE jumps on those videos and to get a badge for posting something off of CNN doesnt hold much merit to me.

^What he said.

Also, it would just give those who live for badges something more to obsess about. If you reward "early adopters", there would be no chaff. Then again, it would somewhat negate the voting cliques here that are largely responsible for the huge amount of inane crap that gets sifted nowadays. I don't know how you could make it work and maintain what integrity the system still has.

I just thought about this because of all the "damn, you beat me by 20 minutes" comments and I thought it would be great to have some kind of mechanism to reward the early birds.

Here is how I would do it:

As soon as a video hits the "Top Videos" list, sifty can go back and check who were the voters #2 to #9. Points could be 9/10 for voter #2, 8/10 for voter #3 and so on up until 1/10 for voter #9.
(Why not voter #1 and voter #10? I think the first voter should not get 10/10, as he is usually the original poster, who gets rewarded with a star anyway when the video hits the top list, and I think voter #10, who gets it out of queue is already covered by the Assisters badge.)

Points add up in the background over time and induce the early adopter badge at certain levels. If that level is set at reasonable intervals it would not lead to "ridiculous levels" either.

Hybrid says...

Actually I guess that could work.

I think the badge levels should double at each level.

Badge level 1 - 100 points total.
Badge level 2 - 300 points total.
Badge level 3 - 700 points total.
Badge level 4 - 1500 points total.
etc.

That should really keep them within a suitable range over time.

Remember that by this model you´d only get points for clips which later end up in the top videos list.

So to get to 100 points, you´d have to be the second upvoter on 112 of those clips.
(By comparison: If you were upvoter #9 on the same 112, you´d only have 11,2 Points.)

So I think 100 seems a bit high for level 1.
I´d set it at 20 Points for level one and then go to 50, 100, 200, 400 and so on.

But I am sure the meatbags behind sifty can figure something out.

Wouldn't this idea foster a mentality of just going through the unsifted tab, upvoting otherwise questionable videos as a game of stat improving? The entire point of having an "unsifted" tab is to sort out the quality videos from the sea of mediocrity, no? I see little point in instituting a mechanism of rewarding voting for its own sake.

well....yeah !

That was the first thing that crossed my mind.

screw quality ( the reason for this site), I want to pad my stats...

I have noticed that Badge Lust has led to some unpleasant side-effects. Would folks be so quick to dupe if they weren't going to earn a badge for duping?

Rewarding people for being #2-#9 will lead to lots of vids getting sifted that should just die in the pqueue.

Please don't reward Sifters for getting vids out of the pqueue. True Sifters' reward is the Sift. Not the Badge.

A perfect example of using Badge Lust for a positive result is the Lounge Lizard Badge. Poor Lounge was pretty lonely for quite a while. The Badge appeared, and folks started being more social there.

Rewarding folks for pushing vids to the Front Page is counterproductive to the whole point of Videosift.
