Advertising

Does anyone else wanna put our heads together to figure out ads that aren't a complete eyesore? I think we can figure out some good ones if we just give it a shot. I'm sure you all don't spend ALL your time on VideoSift, so throw in an idea if you know of an ad that you like. I, for one, don't mind any of the ads that Facebook puts up, so maybe it's worth a look to see what they're running. The CareerBuilder ad in particular is kinda nice, not too flashy, and not animated. Google Text ads aren't too shabby...

Anyone?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Funny, we were just contacted by Monster yesterday, out of the blue. They would like to be on VideoSift- for sure. They know we are all unemployed.

We've also been contacted by Google - and even had a face-to-face with our Adsense account manager. He had a Google messenger bag, nice swag at Google.

oh yeah..and those ads that float on top of screen and follow you down the page. I immediately leave.

I do hope you get some nice advertising. It's time you guys get some funds in for your hard work.

I have heard of people making some serious money with adsense. I have read that from a publisher standpoint adbrite is supposed to be good too, but nowhere near the payout of adsense.

Slap up some text ads that will get major exposure, try it out for a month and see what kind of money you can generate. I would have to believe it would be in the high hundreds to thousands range, granted of course you have a fair amount of uniques.

Woah! Hold on there swampgirl. The one thing I love most about the sift is that it's ad free. I give my kudos to Dag, James, and the gang for keeping it that way.
But truth be told appreciation doesn't make anyone money. (Except maybe hookers, even that is questionable.) But if you are going to blight the sift with ads make em text ads. I hate the flashy myspace KILL TEN RABBITS AND WIN A PS3 crap.
Oh and just out of curiosity karaidl why are you bringing all this up? You're freaking me out by thinking the sift will start polluting the site with ads soon.

I saw my name scrolling down the comments page !

Gorgon, I said "nice" ads. I agree with everyone...NO one wants to see those stupid flashing click this stuff. Tasteful text banners are alright though.

Let's be realistic. The site is growing. The bills are growing. Dag and James are going to have to bite the apple sooner or later.

Well, it's pretty obvious that we're going to have to do a little better than the text ads on the front page, and soon. Just thought I'd try and get a discussion going about ads that we don't mind seeing, because I'm sure we'll have to see them eventually. Rest assured, I definitely don't wanna pollute. This what I created it for, to minimize pollution.

Gorgonheap, I understand why you don't like ads... I don't like ads either. However I belong to a couple of sites, namely metafilter and fark where a paid membership prevents me from dealing with ads. We already have this system on videosift.

Charter members are grandfathered out of advertisements. I understand why you hate advertisements but I guess I feel like 40 bucks a year, which is about what we get off of the CPM's for prolific members is not too much to ask to let us maintain a quality site. The sift is a labor of love, but it is still a labor and as such it takes an increasing amount of time.

At any rate in VS 3.0 we are going to start offering sponsored memberships, where a member can buy a charter membership for 3 months for any other user for 10 dollars. Our suspicion is that prolific members, as well as members that are too young to have their own paypal accounts will be recipients of these gift memberships. These memberships will provide prolific users with at least one possibility to avoid ads.

I think everyone else is leaving it to the guys in charge. Generating revenue with websites is a tough nut to crack. There are several ways to do it but to find the right balance of payout to eyesore ratio is the key. Dag has been in the business a while and I think most trust him to find the right option with the help of James and lucky. While it is thoughtful for users to come up with ideas to try and help, I think most are uncomfortable with giving advice in areas they don't know much about. I too feel uncomfortable doing it and I have been in the ISP/web hosting business for over 8 years. The internet advertising landscape has changed a lot over the past few years but I am sure VS will get it done and do it right.

How many ads are we talking about? And when is Videosift going to sell out? I think in VS 3.0 there should be a more noticeable tag for sponsoring the site. All I see is the upgrade tag. Maybe a "help keep VS ad free" slogan under the title. I realize that maintaining a site like this and dealing with the headaches of technical and people issues gets old quick. I see ads a a prelude to selling out and once that happens the community goes to pot and turns into another you tube, where morons post crap and make shit head comments like "U guys suck!" and "If you don't post this on 3 other vids you'll die in two days!"

I'm just really worried by this. Please if there are ads keep em sparse and if possible in text.
