Should VideoSift Allow "Always On" Perpetual Video Streams?

You may have noticed that we're getting a few always on, 24-hour stream type posts lately. Here's one for Mystery Science Theater 3000. Here's another that's a live feed for MSNBC.

I'm thinking this will be a binding vote and will be codified in the rules- so choose wisely.

I suppose I don't really care one way or another, but I'm not sure why anyone would take issue with live streams. As long as it's a video and in a flash player, I say it's fit for Sifting.

In general, we don't allow full episodes- and this goes a step beyond that. How do you vote on the quality of something that is always in flux?

Hybrid says...

If they are allowed, then the two things suggested above should be implemented:

* They can't be voted on. It doesn't make sense as you'd basically be voting on the stream/news channel itself. What if a channel improves/gets worse down the line? Should you be allowed to change your vote? To simplify, I think votes should not be allowed.
* They should get their own page, I don't even think they should be normal front page.

At the end of the day, I don't come to VideoSift to watch streaming TV. I come to watch fairly short, one-off videos and vote on them accordingly.

"The word change is something all should be able to relate to. Change=good. New forms of embeds become available, we avail ourselves of them to express the inner urge, and so it goes.Streams are cool as fuck.Having one place to come for all of them?...Cool as fuck.

The NEWS streams should be allowed to replace clips from the same channel which litter, and fritter, and twitter about.

Hows about a channel for streams and when someone finds one we can stick it in there without votes, voted, voting, voters-Can we call the news channel stream collection the TELESCREEN channel....1984??

how about VIDEODRONE
IT DRONES, IT BIFFS, IT DAWDLES....LAGGERING 24/7 WITH INEFFECTUAL INFOTAINMENT, 24-7, 365!!

Dying to get in there, hear it's quite peaceful. Constant temp, conjugal visits....fresh flowers

Seems like a can-o-worms but I don't feel we should ban them outright.

Some streams could defy their channel assignments... they might be comedy one day but dead serious the next.
Some might be good one day and garbage the next.
Some might be church-lady approved one day and violate our posting guidelines the next.

Throbbin says...

I know this is premature, but I once suggested a live chat function for stream/film viewing. I think it would be a nice way to bring the community together.

Just a thought.

Kreegath says...

What about feeds that stream content which is forbidden on the site? Or shows that change direction and start streaming forbidden content after having been sifted?

Videosift should be just that. Surely there are other avenues for sifting streams?

choggie says...

^well kreegath, verboten is verboten...no streams that the rest of the rules extant don't cover-
Sifting streams is what was done here to alert the users to the concept nad availability. Popularized by votes.-a seperate channel for streams only is an option we would perhaps benefit from-I would...One Stop Shopping.....Like WALMART.

Imagine the VS as a clearing house for all things internet video (minus the porn) and make it a go-to site for anyone interested in internet video....like ovguide is for streams and downloads. Cept the diffence is, no fear of virus or similar bullshit.

And for crissakes, advertising has become the work of the devil online-S'pecially for these catch-up operations the established network stations have added to try to keep up with dwindling ad-rev from YT-

I envision a world where everyone knows what they need w/o advertising, which would be relegated to what they may want....for extras-I imagine a world where everyone creates what they envision, but hey....gonna be awhile-gotta wake everyone up from the illusion first-

IS THIS POLL OVER YET!!!??
