Poll: Should polls be shortened to two days?

I think polls need to be shortened to two days. As it is, a poll sits on top of the Sift Talk page for damn near half a week. This is unnecessary. Two days should allow plenty of time for members to vote. And if you miss a poll, oh well, life goes on. It's not like we're electing the leader of the galaxy. And even if we were, we'd probably end up with Chancellor Palpatine. And we all know how well that worked out.

I didn't vote, because I'd be OK with either 2 or 4 days. Maybe you could give the poster the option of picking one or the other, with the understanding that polls about sift business would last 4 days and more general or humorous polls would get 2. I don't think polls should be any longer than 2 days.

I personally think polls should stay open indefinitely, giving the user to voice his/her opinion when they happen to come upon the poll in the Sift Talk.

Other than that, I don't care how long it's stickied up on top of the Sift Talk, but leaving it open indefinitely can shorten the time it needs to be stickied for an appropriate response from members.

Two days is too short IMO. Not everyone comes to VS daily or often. Why not make it longer and do the next poll whenever a new one comes up. Minimum two days per poll. The new one takes over the sticky spot while the old one is still active until it is closed.

Shortening it to two days will only serve to shut off this site even more to people outside the core clique and eventually you can delete all but the 20 odd accounts that operate the site as it is.

It's been just about 48 hours since I posted this (closer to 50, to be more precise0, and 32 people have already voted. The lower participation is to be expected over the weekend, but 32 is still higher than the 20 odd accounts that you say operate this site. During a 48-hour period hundreds of different members log in, so access to any poll would not be that restrictive.

Your argument about the "core clique" is just vague enough not to impugn anyone, yet strong enough to suggest that shortening a poll would somehow be favorable to just a handful of members. An argument like that needs to be more specific, or else you're just playing the outsider-politics card.

campionidelmondo says...

I'm not trying to play any sift-politics card by any means or get into talking about the clique-ish community that represents the core userbase of this site (especially not by naming names, I think it's clear enough anyways). Of course you have more votes, because you have to account for a fraction of the weekly visitors who happen to stumble upon a given 4-day poll.

Anyways, I think you brought up this question for legitimate reasons that have nothing to do with catering to the core clique. The problem you see, if I understand you correctly, is that a single poll dominates the sift talk page too much for too long, while also preventing any new poll. Legitimate points, but the current system fits well into the basicness the sift talk area exibits. There's no thread bumping when a new post is made, no real subforum structure. You can create channel talk posts, but people won't be aware of them if they're not in the 10 post sidebar, and as sonn as their the 11th post, they're basically invisible (unless you bookmark).

More complexity and possibilites would be nice, but I'm not sure they're really needed for such a small clique/community, and certainly shouldn't work towards making this site more inaccessible to a broader userbase. Hell most people aren't even aware there's a talk area, or bother to check it out.

^I think I understand what you're saying. Or at least I'm going to pretend to.

Barring any dramatic reversal it appears that 2 days will win this poll, but if it had gone the other way I wouldn't have complained. I just think they sit there too long, when another poll could be taking its place. We only allow one poll at a time, so for one to monopolize that single spot for almost half a week just seems excessive.

Maybe if a poll would only sit on top of Sift Talk for the first 24 or 48 hrs (like Tymberwulf and ant seem to be suggesting), and then another poll could be posted while the first one drifts down in the Sift Talk listings, it might work. However I do think all polls should close at some time (sorry, Twulf). Some of the polls involve changes to the rules, and we can't implement changes if the polling never ends.

Just one man's opinion.

NetRunner says...

I would love to see the ability to have multiple polls. Not quite sure why we're required to do 'em one at a time.

It would also be nice if we could integrate polls into a regular sift talk post, without it being a front page kind of thing.
