Member @ctrlaltbleach has decided to use his shiny new ruby (congrats, btw!) to create a new channel. Submitted for your approval is the France channel. As ctrlaltbleach describes it:
Anything and everything having to do with France, the French language, and French culture.
It's unclear as to whether french kissing, french fries, french doors, or french ticklers will be permissible.

Update: Per ctrlaltbleach's request, the proposed channel shall be named "French" rather than "France." If that causes you to want to change your vote, yell and scream about it here.

Because I love France and the French language looking for French only videos on other sites tends to not be that easy. If we had a channel myself and others like me will be able to watch videos that only have to do with France or are in French.

Actually, now that I've slept on it, I would much prefer a "Europe" channel, to match the Asia and downunder channels. I think the only direct country we have is canada, and I think it should have been northamerica instead, but canada is shorter I guess. "The americas" heh.

Anyway, if you were to make Europe instead, I would be a lot happier with it.

There is already a Britain (or British) channel so I don't think a european channel would be entirely appropriate. I am completely in favour of a French channel and have a video in my personal queue that will go straight in there.

I like this idea better. If French/France, what about Spanish/Latino, Brazillan/Portugese, etc.?

French/Canadian?

Sure, I think language specific tags are fine as long as that's not the only tags that are used.

I don't know french, don't speak it or read it. But if a funny video is out there, I'd hate to miss it because it gets buried in a french channel. (this goes for any language.)

Is it possible to make it mandatory that all language posts must be cross-posted into at least one other channel as well? Otherwise it's language segregation which I don't support.

Sure go nuts.
We need a grand restructring of our channels, but that's not new, so in the mean time, go right ahead.

I second this, especially the grand restructuring of channels thing.

In this post-wilhelm era, I don't see how we could reasonably deny anyone anything.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Yes, in the annals of history it will be truly recorded that we are now living in the post Wilhelm era.

There are some major issues with a grand channel restructure. I'd be curious to know what beefs people have with the current structure (besides Wilhelm of course).

I don't have any beefs with the channels themselves, but it would be really nice if they were categorized instead of a huge wall of text!

They need to be organized by genre instead of alpha.

And no,I don't care. I think every one should be able to create the channel they want. I'm not sure were the public opinion of this started. I thought it was only Dag who got to deny a choice based on duplicity - therefore we shouldn't need to vote every time there is a new channel creation.

Most of my beef(s) stem from the fact that we only create channels as a reward for people achieving Ruby status. Because of that, we wind up with a lot of inconsistent and niche channels, as well as some weird gaps when it comes to broad categories.

That wouldn't bother me, if it weren't for the fact that "channels" are the primary organizational structure for this site's content.

Ideally I'd love to see the channels go through a standardization & rationalization process, and ordered into some sort of heirarchy of categories (e.g. Rock is a subcategory of Music, which is a subcategory of Arts) so that if someone wants to look through the "Arts" channel, they'll get stuff from bravo, music, 1sttube, etc.

We also have channels that are more properly thought of as being the intersection of two or more larger categories (e.g. eco is the intersection of nature and either science or politics). People looking for "politics" should probably also get eco videos, as should someone looking for "science" videos.

I guess my overall point is that we're making it harder to use the site, when it comes to browsing or posting videos, because we're currently using channels as a way to reward users who achieve Ruby status instead of a way to organize content. I say we find some other way to reward Rubies, and make the organization of videos the explicit purpose of the channel system.

While I'm at it, I'd also like to see the maximum length of video titles doubled or tripled.

I absolutely agree with all of Netrunner's points, but especially this one.

It's also sort of an odd reward for ruby status. It's not much or a 'personal' bonus - only more sift housekeeping.
I'd much rather be able to change the color of my page, or name, or any of those fancy charter toys..cough...
