@longde has created channel *Africa. Before we activate or decline, as is demanded by @siftbot, we must first determine if there is adequate community support for the new channel.

So cast your vote above and the majority will determine the future of @longde's Africa Experience.

Hi,

Here is a thread that gives some background on why Africa was chosen: http://videosift.com/poll/What-should-I-choose-as-a-channel

Basically the guidelines for this channel would be:

Africa is:

-Culture, History, Politics, Philosophy, Technology, & News of Africa and her Diaspora
-about Northern and Sub-saharan Africans of all races, and diaspora members
-Geological and Geographic Africa
-Travel within Africa, or within diaspora communities
-Individual stories that speak to the unique cultural experience of Africans & diaspora members

Africa is not:

-Insulting animations or images of black people
-People behaving badly towards black people
-Any old video with a black person in it that does not speak to larger issues of culture, history,
etc (e.g., some black dude just washing his car)
-racist or disproven theories about black people
-Black sports, movie, or music stars, unless they have made a very significant social/cultural impact
-Videos whose central theme is race or racism, and not Africa as defined above

Just out of curiosity, who are "diaspora members" in this context?

So a video extolling the contributions of African-Americans to America's history would be appropriate for *Africa, but a video of, say, MLK talking about the nature of the bigotry aimed at African-Americans is not?

Or maybe the latter would go in both Africa and equality?

Just trying to think ahead to the kinds of cases that will wind up coming before the Siftpreme Court.

Listen, I'm not super anal about this type of stuff, as long as a sincere attempt is made to adhere to the guidelines.

What I am trying to avoid is defining Africans by what others have done to them, rather than what they have themselves done. I think this may be a little subtle, but it's an important line.

So a vid about people wantonly murdering african americans would not quality. A vid about african american(s) fighting against racism would qualify.

I would accept the MLK video, given his unquestionable social/cultural impact.Edit: Also the MLK vid would qualify under history and politics of the african diaspora.>> ^NetRunner:

@longde, I didn't mean to imply you were anal about this. I'm definitely the one who's anal about this stuff.

Your answer makes perfect sense to me -- especially this: "What I am trying to avoid is defining Africans by what others have done to them, rather than what they have themselves done."

In fact, I think that's a very good a way of putting it, and something you should strongly consider putting in your channel's description as a summary!

I voted yes, but I want to know where to put my "Any old videos with a black person in them".

Seriously. I've given up arguing with sifters wrongly tagging *.asia in their sifts just because they see an Asian person in the video.

The video could be about making mashed potatoes in Idaho, and it'll still get Asia tagged because the chef happened to be Asian or something.
