Things aren't always as they seem

Various people find out their DNA ancestry.

*quality idea to make comparative DNA compulsory. It would certainly screw with people that advocate separation by race. It's much harder to dehumanize people when you realize you are likely related.

Dunno, some relatives really hate each other

I'd love to see my DNA ancestry so I can say nigger (sorry sorry sorry) without white guilt because it says I'm 0.3% Sub-Saharan African.

No rly tho, I'm English as far back as anybody has looked so I'm actually a bit worried that it would turn out that the DNA indicates that my family have been sitting on this island FOREVER. I want an excuse to travel the world to find my "roots", fuck Holidays in the UK, it had best tell me I'm a Slav with bits of African and, err, Turkish! Yeah, I want to see Istanbul. Give me a bit of Turk too please.

Yes, I have family I despise, but I still consider them humans (not that I see that as much of a compliment).
My hope would be, once they know they are part African, Asian, Mesopotamian, etc., people wouldn't continue to think of other people in those dehumanizing tribalistic terms.

Edit: Isn't it more likely you would find out that you have unknown ancestors from elsewhere, either because they were wrongly assumed to be "English" or were wrongly assumed to be the father? I thought this video did a good job showing how wrong people's perceptions are about their own ancestry.

Too bad that this is simply an ad and the people are all actors. It's simply not possible to tell from a simple DNA sample without comparison if someone has a German or Danish heritage. Things aren't always as they seem.

I would like to see some control tests where people's lineage is well known for a couple hundred years. And maybe some explanations as to how the percentage is arrived at. So if your whole family was british and your great great grandfather was 1/2 egyptian, what would that look like?

Phoozsays...

And you're actually not exactly 50% of both parents! You get a mixture of both but not exactly 50/50. Both of my grandmothers were 100% Norwegian, so both my parents thought they were 50% Norwegian, so my brother and I thought we were 50% Norwegian. I did the ancestry test and it turns out I'm 73% Norwegian! 11% Irish/Scotch, and the rest is European! Craziness!

Paybacksays...

I'm sorry, but this only works on people who:

1) believe you.
2) believe "science" works that way
3) are already fairly accepting of other races to begin with.

I wouldn't care if my DNA was 80% German or any other country, because I was born and raised in the USA, I'm an American and that will ALWAYS come first. Your allegiance lies with what you BELIEVE in, not with what's in your DNA. If you lie down and let your genes tell you how to act, then you'll lie down for just about anything.

You can buy this test online, friend of mine did. Costs about $60 I believe. She was adopted and never new her parents so it was extra-special to her. All she knew is she was born in PA, currently living in upstate NY. Her test revealed she had like 20% south-american and a small % native american and a large portion german, which makes sense as there's a large population of germans in PA called 'pennsylvania dutch'.

newtboysays...

I bought it for my wife for Xmas....$100 through 23 and me. Results aren't back yet.
Her grandparents are both 1/2 Filipino, so she's interested to find out what the other halves are, and what mixture made up the 1/2 Flip parts. There could be any number of nationalities in that soup.
What she'll do with that information, I have no idea.

Ha!!! Got them back, among other things, they say she's 1.5% African! My old southern grandmother must be spinning in her grave.
