Fair warning: This is a long, boring 'summary' with little information about the video. Skip it unless you're a masochist!
I felt like posting something a little more personal than usual for my attempt at 'going gold'. I don't expect to gather many votes for this one, and if it doesn't make it out, I'm not going to requeue it and will instead sift something lighter.
This is a scene from Brokeback Mountain, where we are given a glimpse into Ennis's past that helps to explain his deep-seated fear and inability to be with the person he loves, leading eventually to a tragic conclusion.
This movie made more of an impact on me than any other I have ever seen. I can't possibly get that point across, but I say it with utter conviction. I feel like I could write an entire book about it, covering the heartbreaking story, the incredibly nuanced acting performances, the subtle metaphoric directing and cinematography, and the haunting music. It is one of my favourite movies, though it is so depressing it's hard to call it that.
Rather than go on for pages and pages (and believe me, I really could) about every little detail, I'll just say that I think it's a very important movie for everyone to see and think about. I chose this particular scene because it doesn't spoil the movie, yet manages to say something about what hatred and fear can do to a person.
Lastly, yes, this is partially a goodbye to the recently deceased Heath Ledger. I had planned on picking a Brokeback clip for a while now, so the timing of his passing just makes it more important to me. I don't care for celebrity culture, but his performance as Ennis is one of the most amazing I have ever seen (I'm glad
Daniel Day-Lewis agrees), and I am saddened by the loss of potential.
Not a very cheerful choice, is it? If I ever make it to gold100 I'll choose something with more buoyancy.
