The shot couldn't possibly go in, but it did. Sweden couldn't possibly lose, but it did.
There was 2:24 remaining in the third period and Sweden and Belarus tied 3-3 in the 2002 Olympic hockey quarterfinals. Vladimir Kopat of Belarus took a 70-foot shot toward the swedish net, the shot bounced wildly off goalie Tommy Salo's head and went in the net. Belarus scored one of the greates upsets in Olympic history as it beat Sweden 4-3.
Belarus won despite being outscored 16-2 in its previous two games. As the game ended, the stunned Swedes -- easily the best team in the Olympics until now, with a 3-0 record and impressive wins over Canada and the Czech Republic -- stood silently as the Belarusian players swarmed Mezin, who stopped 44 shots.
