The Making of "Saving Private Ryan"
Good post. I've always been interested in the history of WWII, I'm re-reading Ken Burns' "The War" these days. The best book I have read is David Webster's "Parachute Infantry", he was a good writer who was there at the Normandy and Market Garden airdrops and also did Germany occupation duty. They did him a real disservice in the "Band of Brothers" episode "The Last Patrol", they made him out to be a weasel when he was anything but.

Woman Accuses White Male of Stealing Her Cultural Hairstyle
If you think the outrage expressed here is floundering and forced, you should imagine how we feel about your impotent, condescending reaction to our outrage. Please double check all harnesses and straps for safety before you parachute down from your own high horse. A horse so high your dismount could be sponsored by red bull.
What's funny is that you think being annoyed by Dreadlock Hitler is pathetic, but you're annoyed because the target looks like someone you don't like and listens to music you don't enjoy. I guess that's just fine, but we should all grow up!
He sure looks and sounds like every burn out at a phish concert I've ever known. Just a very annoying type of dude, in my experience.
But whatever, not like I feel like he needs to be "taught a lesson" or needs a "head check", like the floundering outrage in these comments.
Ehang184-chinese unveil new passenger drone prototype
"Absolute safety by design"
- open props and the passenger has to pass between them to get into the cockpit. all it takes is a false ignition or some other mistake after it lands , and the person is cut in half.
- drone design. just one of the 4 engines fails, and that shit drops to the ground like a brick, because it has no gliding properties and it can't autorotate like a helicopter or gyro, and at the height it will operate, I doubt a parachute would be of any use.
yeaaaahh... Not really anxious to try one out
Wingboard Proof of Concept
good luck getting your parachute to work at that altitude.
SpaceX Lands Stage 1 on Land!
I'm just guessing, but I'm fairly sure the fuel is a relatively small part of the cost of any space vehicle. Isn't it just liquid hydrogen and oxygen? They wouldn't be using solid fuel for landing, which these days is often some treated rubber or aluminum oxide, so also fairly cheap...
...cheap that is, when compared to just tossing the pressure tanks, pumps, high pressure-high temperature lines, multiple moveable nozzles, mixing/reaction chambers, computers to run it all, redundant safety features, guidance, frame, skin, etc. that make up the fragile vehicle that can't be dropped by parachute or other passive means and still be reusable.
Can someone edumacate me? I get that the point of this seems to be the achievement of reusable rockets. But the fuel required to slow the rocket and stabilize it for landing seems counterproductive. Or has the cost of rocket fuel compared to the cost of building new rockets made it so that they don't care about the extra rocket fuel they burn now?
I Jumped Off The Golden Gate Bridge
Yeah, I don't know. Jumping out of a plane with a parachute on was exciting. Getting rolled over sharp rocks by a 10 foot wave after getting caught in a rip while surfing = freaked the fuck out and spending 6 months getting over my sheer terror that it would happen again. And lucky to be alive, and I wasn't even contemplating self harm let alone suicide.
Life lessons are hard to learn when you know they're fake. Reality is the best (and unfortunately sometimes last) teacher we'll ever know.
Hmmm.....
Thinking about my previous comment, I wonder if this is a good problem for VR therapy. If a therapist could let a patient virtually jump and gain that realization that their problems are either solvable or meaningless, it just might turn their lives around instantly.....or it might just desensitize them from the fear of jumping.
Hmmmm.....
People are insane! (2015)
Yes.

Makes me wonder if people will ever be able to land in wing suits, without pulling a chute.
