China Builds World's Largest Dam 10-Year Engineering Project

newtboy says...

A bit odd they're making an enormous concrete dam as a carbon emission offset, because cement makes .9lbs of CO2 for every lb of cement. (Cement makes up approximately 10% of concrete by weight...1 gallon of concrete weighs approximately 20 lbs, they used 21.4 million gallons) ....that's a shitload of CO2 for materials alone.
Plus big dams kill their rivers.
Hydro electric is not really green energy....not this kind of hydro electric anyway. Maybe micro hydro.

Honest Government Ad | Carbon Capture and Storage

newtboy says...

If you count the total costs, remove government subsidies and exemptions from ecological laws, there are few more expensive ways to generate energy than oil and coal today.

Turbines, solar, wave, tidal, and geothermal are all insanely cheaper today when you count the whole cost, not just the price at the meter. Have been for decades. My solar system paid for itself in about 8 years.

However wind turbines, solar and battery storage improvements is coming about we are starting to see this shift.

The Islands With Too Much Power

newtboy says...

Duh....install as many high power using carbon sequestering designs as there's room for. Use that surplus clean power to offset some of the enormous dirty power emissions...suddenly there won't be enough wind and water power again.
Too much clean power is only a problem for the completely unimaginative.

He touched on why I've said for 20+ years that it's already too late to stop out of control climate change or save civilization as we know it. Even if we managed to produce more clean energy than we can distribute, switching older polluting technology over to clean energy is a bigger problem than clean generation. Assume we had the ability to power every form of transportation using clean and cheap energy....it would still take decades and tens if not hundreds of trillions to replace the combustion engines alone, with the corresponding new ecological issues of creating, building, and implementing a new power usage method across the board. In order to reverse the carbon trend, we needed an excess of clean energy and the desire to use it exclusively decades ago, because the change over will take decades after the clean power generation ability exists.... decades we no longer have.

Side note, aren't they worried all those wind turbines are going to give them all cancer?

How'd you like Dumb Donald's low energy, rambling, disjointed, delusional, dementia ridden speech this weekend? He doesn't have a speech impediment, but he still cannot give a rational or intelligible speech, even when he's reading one. He's sure making Biden look good by comparison.

Are you getting time off so you can spend a grand to be in Don the Con's presence for a few hours? You do understand that he's telling you by planning these events that he knows there's zero chance he will be president again, despite what his crack head friends say.

When you buy your tickets, can you post the disclaimer that comes with it? I want to know how he words the "no refunds if I'm in court or prison on the event dates" clause.

This is an Euler's Disk

BSR says...

I would be interested to see what would happen just before the disk stopped and suddenly there was no gravity. Even though it sounds like it's spinning faster I'm sure it's just because the edge of the disk is just closer to the mirror.

Suddenly without gravity would the energy cause the disk to rotate making it look like a ball floating in space or would it wobble and take off in one direction?

Could this even be done in space?

Are there any mathematicians in the audience tonight?

Are four questions in a row too much?

I've No More F***s To Give

Lyrics and chords:
'I’ve No More Fucks To Give' By Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq

(Uke tuning GCEA)

Intro - Bb C7 F7 Bb

Verse 1

Bb
I’ve tried, tried, tried
F7
And I’ve tried even more
F7
I’ve Cried, Cried, Cried
Bb
And I can’t recall what for
Bb
I’ve pressed, I’ve pushed, I’ve yelled, I’ve begged
C7
In hope of some success

But the inevitable fact is that
F7
It never will impress

Chorus 1

Bb
I’ve no more fucks to give,
C7
My fucks have runneth dry,
F7
I’ve tried to go fuck shopping
Bb
But there’s no fucks left to buy

I’ve no more fucks to give,
C7
Though more fucks I’ve tried to get,
F7
I’m over my fuck budget and
Bb
I’m now in fucking debt

Verse 2
I strive, strive, strive
To get everything done
I’ve played by all the rules
But I’ve very rarely won,
I’ve smiled, I’ve charmed, I’ve wooed
I’ve laughed,
Alas to no avail
I’ve run round like a moron,
To unequivocally fail!

Chorus 2
I’ve no more fucks to give,
My fuck fuse has just blown,
I’ve been hunting for my fucks all day,
But they’ve upped and fucked off home,
I’ve no more fucks to give,
My fuck rations are depleted,
I’ve rallied my fuck army but
It’s been fucking defeated!

Bridge

Eb Bb
The effort has just not been worth
F7 Bb Bb7
The time or the expense
D7 Gm7
I’ve exhausted all my energy
C7 F7
For minimal recompense
Eb Bb
The complete lack of acknowledgement
F7 Bb Bb7
Has now begun to gall
C7
And I’ve come to realise that I
F7
Don’t give a fuck at all!

Chorus 3
I’ve no more fucks to give,
My fucks have flown away,
My fucks are now so fucked off
They’ve refused to fucking stay!
I’ve no more fucks to give,
My fucks have gone insane
They’ve come back round and passed me
While they’re fucking off again!

Chorus 4
I’ve no more fucks to give,
My fucks have all dissolved,
I’ve planned many projects
But my fucks won’t be involved!
I’ve no more fucks to give,
My fucks have all been spent,
They’ve fucked off from the building
And I don’t know where they went!

Outro

My 50 Cal Exploded

Khufu says...

Maybe what these people mean (whether they know it or not) is that their belief in a god gave them the false(yet real enough to them) confidence that they would be ok, which gave them the courage and energy to push through and do all the things to make sure they had the opportunity to have the medical staff fix them. It's like how a lot of people have religion to thank for getting sober and off the street, not because of the divine influence of the hand of god or some shit... some people just need the religious 'narrative' to help them keep moving forward, where others may not need it at all and not see the point.

because obviously if god can physically save this dude's life, then he would have also had the power to make that barrel survive the hot round which I'm sure the dude in question would have preferred.

newtboy said:

God always gets the best press.

People love to credit him with saving them from near death despite it clearly being extreme efforts by skilled doctors that did, but never blame God when it was pure chance and bad luck that caused their mortal wounds.

To me, if God deserves credit, it's for the chance happening, the bad luck out of anyone's control, not the Herculean human efforts to repair the damage. If people really believed God intervenes, all Christians would be Christian Scientists or Jehovah's witnesses and refuse human medical treatments.

This whole video is crap first because calling them mansions is a huge exaggeration. These all look live very modest homes in perhaps expensive neighborhoods. The students name Trump or Nancy Pelosi living in these shacks compared to what they really live it. I'm sorry I even waisted my time and energy commenting on this waist of a video.

Wavepiston - Wave Powered Desalination And Electricity

cloudballoon says...

But... but... Republicans will say they look ugly under the ocean! Just like Trump said Wind mills are eyesores!

Back to the science of it. I wonder how much energy these oscillating plates can generate Wh? Their movements don't seem to be that much. Factor in the construction cost, damage/maintenance from salt water erosion, large fish bumping into it, the weather, etc. It might be feasible for small island communities/nations, but countries with a large landmass to coastal access ratio... its contribution to the overall energy sector might not be that significant. But every little bit of renewable, environmental risk-free energy helps, so, good stuff!

A Message from Alaskans (to Texas) on Wind Power

cloudballoon says...

Not in this climate of fear over all things Nuclear post-Chernobyl. Besides, with so much de-regulation and lack on competency & accountability, would you trust the 21st-century private Nuclear energy sector MORE than the 20th century's? We really need to leverage as much renewable energy sources like Wind/Solar/Hydro first and use nuclear as backup. Fossil based must be the dead-last option for those places that got no other viable means...

eric3579 said:

I'm all for nuclear, but what's the reality of that happening in the states anytime soon or at all? Are there plants being built right now or planned to be built?

Do we Need Nuclear Energy to Stop Climate Change?

newtboy says...

Depends on your definition of "need", and your definition of "stopping" climate change.

Because I'm convinced enough natural feedback loops are in effect that there's no chance at all of stopping further climate change, and only a slight chance of slowing the rate of change and only if humanity fundamentally changes first, I find the question flawed.

I find it odd that tidal energy (different from hydro) is never considered in these debates. It's simple, relatively cheap, easy to maintain, and best of all predictable and consistent. All you need is a shoreline with a relatively large tide swing, a small inlet, and a tidal flat.

At best, nuclear is a stop gap measure that trades one planetary poison for another.....largely because we aren't responsible with it....building on shores in earthquake zones for convenience, banning fuel recycling, having no long term waste plan and handling waste insanely (Japan, I'm looking at you and your plans to dump Fukushima irradiated water into the ocean)....It's far from "green" the way we do it.
