VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Front Page (Sift Talk Post)

eric3579 says...

So i looked at the new beta on my friends phone and i really liked the design and way it worked. I especially liked that the header had drop down menus like the old vs. Also its all in a single column . No need to scroll to the right to see content. The layout was also pleasing to my eye.

Now for what i see on my computer. The double column thing is a no go for me. I find it so uncomfortable to look at. Just seems messy and clutered to my eye. Also i so much prefer drop down menus where i don't have to move my cursor to the far left to choose something. I like the old school drop down easy peasy.

Agreed that the channels need to be present.

Also, the placement of the vote total with the upvote and downvote arrows are placed so far at the bottom of the page (at least on Firefox) I either need to scroll down to access it to vote or I have to be very accurate with my cursor.

Adjusting that up off the "bottom" of the page (without having to scroll) would be nice to have access to. Otherwise, I could imagine videos not getting voted for at all. Which would not be good needless to say.

Interesting. I find that I learn MUCH better with Rocksmith than I do from a straight tab. I hate the difficulty levels; I'd rather just show ALL of the notes ALL of the time (although that is easily fixed by just selecting the whole song and turning up the difficulty to 100%), but riff repeater plus slowing a song down to 60% or so (depending on how tough the bits are) has been my new ideal way of learning more difficult songs.

But for bass at least, I find that I'm able to sight-read the majority of songs to 97%+ accuracy. Probably 9 out of 10 new songs that I try, even if I've never looked at a tab before, I can get that kind of accuracy with the Rocksmith note highway / tab hybrid.

I do agree that sometimes it would be nice to be able to pause and just show a pure tab, to have more time to prepare and anticipate what things are coming. I know of two things to assist with that:

1) I know that there is a program that somebody put together that can read Rocksmith .psarc files and automatically create a tab text file from the song's arrangements. I can't recall the name of it, but I know it exists -- I've seen people talking about it at www.customsforge.com, the community for creating custom Rocksmith DLC tracks. I'll do some searching and see if I can find the exact name of that program for you.

2) As an alternative to Rocksmith if you prefer reading tabs but like playing along with the recording, check out "Go Playalong", which you can use to sync a guitar pro or powertab format tab with an .mp3 or other audio file and do Rocksmith-like features like slowing down, etc. but with the cursor scrolling through a traditional text-based tab. I sometimes use this also, but overall I prefer Rocksmith now. Works quite a bit like GuitarPro, but the cursor scrolling through the song is more intelligent about keeping bars ahead of your current position in view, and most importantly it lets you sync up to an actual recording rather than just playing back MIDI.

I'd have to disagree. I bought 2014 last year and it's a fun game, but as a learning tool it's very limited.

For a start, it just really REALLY needs a mode where you can read the tab for the part without playing it. Maybe it's just me, but I don't know any guitarist who plays from sight. You learn the part, then play it back from memory.

Windows 8: The Animated Evaluation

I tried the developer preview, and it took me about half an hour of playing around to figure it out. It's not that bad, but it's not good either. I agree with some of his complaints about the OS, like the charms bar. It works different depending on if you're in the desktop or metro screens. It makes no since that the charms bar comes in from the side by moving the mouse to the right top/bottom corners to bring it up where the left corners bring their functions up in that corner.

Some of his rant, like the control panel, make him sound like an idiot. He claims to be some kind of expert, but he can't find the control panel? Seriously, from the start screen just begin typing control and there it is, for me it's the top one after typing "co." He also doesn't use the Windows key, and doesn't think anyone uses it. I use it all the time, ever since I got my first keyboard that had one on it. There are a lot of Win+Key that make things quicker and easier than doing it with the mouse. When I leave my desk, I press Win+L and lock my system. To do this with the mouse, you'd have to click the start button, move the cursor and hover over the shutdown menu, then click lock.

One of my complaints about Win8 is that the OS is basically the continuity thing he talks about. Some settings are split between the old control panel and the Metro UI's settings panel. For example, I wanted to create a new user account on my test machine. In Win7, go to control panel, user accounts, manage other accounts, click new user. In Win 8 I open the control panel and click user accounts, manage other accounts, but instead of a create new account option being there, it says create new account in PC Settings, which when clicked takes you to the metro full screen settings page.

Even in the desktop everything looks flat and provides no visual feedback as to what's interactive.

VideoSift 5.0 bugs go here. (Sift Talk Post)

The list of who downvoted the vid is missing. Is that on purpose?

And this isn't a bug.... except to bug you.... there is something missing from Sift5 that us obsessed Sifters used all the time -- in the last version, if you put your cursor over your own name, a drop down menu would pop, showing you the details of your unsifted vids and your most recent published vids.

I miss it something awful. I know @eric3579 does, too.

Any chance it will come back, when there is time to "fix" it?

I'd appreciate knowing if it is NEVER coming back, so I can start my mourning process and can stop looking for it.

UNIQUE VIEWS
My favorite is "unique views."
Put your cursor over the number of "views" and "unique views" pops up.
My understanding is that this is the number of registered Sifters who have viewed the vid. Doesn't count lurkers, doesn't count multiple visits.
Gives a better idea of how your vid is doing.
5 votes with 150 views is terrible.
5 votes with 7 unique views is great.

Interesting, I see a ratio of votes to total views when I hover the mouse over the views, it doesn't mention number of unique views at all.
Good post btw

Figured it out - unique views are displayed for sifted videos, ratio of votes to views is displayed for unsifted videos - makes sense now
