Penn Says: Happy High Taxes

All Viking, all awesome. The restrictions on immigration to Denmark are pretty high from outside of EU. We have some diversity, but far less than say the UK or US.

I pay a 37 % income tax, not to mention Moms which is a 25 % Value Added Tax to everything you buy, and I feel pretty good about it.

What's the citizenry diversity like where you're at? Is there a huge influx of immigrants from all continents coming over to become citizens?

And that's the point. It's impossible to create a sustainable welfare system, which is a high tax for services system, and have open borders or even relaxed immigration. A big talking point in favor of high taxation from the left in America is that it works so well in places like Denmark, but they're culturally closed off.

Wouldn't it be a step back to have a world where all countries are open to tourism only with none open to immigration? That sounds horrible. I like that the US is open, albeit not open enough, to those seeking a better life. I just don't want to have to pay for them.

I don't know about the eia, but I think it's so awesome that he didn't cover it up. He looks like a blazing viking from hell and he's about to kick some ass.

Zero Punctuation: Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

entr0py says...

Yahtzee is right on about the gameplay. And that really needs to be mentioned upfront, on account of it being a game.

But there were a couple things that Enslaved did so unusually well that I couldn't help but be endeared. First, the acting was truly compelling. Both in terms of the voice acting and the very carefully done, natural and expressive animation. Monkey was played by Andy Serkis, and you can tell he worked with the developers on how to create a digital performance that seems human.

The other part I was pleasantly surprised by is the teamwork puzzles. I have such fond memories of games like the Lost Vikings and Project Eden that it's great to get a taste of that again. Unfortunately they really missed an opportunity in not going further with it, but for a couple hours it was quite fun.

I'm not saying you should buy the game, lord no. You'd need more than an 8 hour single-player game with no replayability to justify $60. But definitely rent it.

UFC 121: Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez

budzos says...

I enjoy a good UFC match and the surrounding drama, but does anyone else wish they'd go back to the days of UFC I through III where it was a lot more like Street Fighter II? It used to be a crazy clash of styles and personalities... now everyone does "MMA style striking plus grappling" and the main difference between fighters is their specific mix of striking (do they also kick?) and grappling (are they former wrestlers or life-long jiu-jitsu practicioners?).

I've always thought of sports as a substitute for combat... all those guys in the NHL, NBA, NFL would have been renowned warriors if they were born vikings, celts, moors, vassals, etc. at certain times throughout history. They do sports because they're extraordinarily good with their bodies... biomechanical geniuses. Fortunately their placement in time allows them to use these skills to their own betterment without mortal risk. Because sports are only analagous to combat. So I can appreciate the point of putting the words "sport" in sarcasm-quotes when talking about a sport that is about beating the shit out of another person. Once the sport becomes actual combat, the metaphor is so direct (if all sports are a metaphor for combat) that instead of a "sport" they should just call it "professional combat". Of course, this is just semantic wankery. It's a sport.

Man Learns To Speak Norwegian In A Single Night!

Gunter says...

Raaagh is indeed correct. If you bothered to watch this awesome movie. You would have noticed he learns it on his journey to the homeland of the norse people. Which in those days most likely took about a month or more. As in the beginning the Vikings/Norsemen pickup the Arabian man in the desert. GG

Last night's True Blood (Blog Entry by Sarzy)

Bon Temps should be popular enough around here for it to get enough votes.

That said, I didn't particularly like Flanagan's Vampire Feds. They looked completely out of place. But you are absolutely right, the King of Mississippi saved the day by his pure awesomeness. It'll be interesting to see how our Viking prince plans to solve this problem.
