I’ve plucked these vids from my Mess O’ Potamia playlist because I find them to be a highly fascinating development in the documentation of warfare. The advances in technology in the last decade have made it much easier for soldiers to record the chaos of the world they live it on the front lines. The internet, in turn, allows for faster and wider dispersal of their experiences. Vietnam might have been the first televised war, but this war is probably documented 100x more thoroughly... there are not only more news networks now, but there is 24-hour coverage, AND the media has as much of a stake in the war as any other industry. War is covered now like it has never been, and these videos are an integral part of that increase in coverage. How will all this immediate access to events on the ground change how the civilian population views war? We've already started seeing some of the effects of this with the Abu Ghraib scandal. Where will it go from here?
