The Search At San Jose (IBM RAMAC Story)

A short film detailing the concept and engineering that went into producing the IBM 305A RAMAC, or the first hard disk drive. Most interesting at 5:45 is how simple the disk platters are prepared.

The technology was at the time a huge leap forward for random access capability in data, spinning at 1200 RPM and stored slightly less than 5 megabytes. To buy one of these outright in 1956 you would have needed $160,000.

Today in 2009 for less than $100 you can get 200,000 times the storage capacity.
