This is a proof of concept piece by a Chinese tech group on how to spoof a proximity key for a car. Proximity keys are the keys we all carry in our pockets/purses for modern cars--when you get near to the car, it unlocks and allows you to start the car.

It suddenly occurred to the Chinese engineers; if it's all about signal strength---what about if I just amplify the transmitted signal of a key fob in someone's pocket while they are buying lunch--you can have your associate start the car out in the street---and drive way with it.

They won't be able to restart it once they turn it off---but if the car is being stolen to part it out (stealing it for the body panels to re-sell to auto shops )---you don't care.

$20 in parts.

Truth be told, it underlines the blindspot of auto companies around certain kinds of tech (where are their white hats?)---because this seems very close to the concept of a wifi-expander (and yes, I know we all use meshed Wifi networks now).
