in 1987 clive barker created a truly unique horror film.the 80's had seen the rise of such slasher films as "friday the 13th" and "nightmare on elm street" all taking a nod from john carpenter's "halloween".clive barker went a decidedly different route, where not only did the demons of our dreams TALK,but that there were rules.
hellraiser was based on the novella "hellbound heart",mainly focusing on the man frank cotton and his never-ending search for greater "experiences".he purchases a mysterious puzzle box, which he soon learns is no ordinary puzzle box,but a key to summon the "cenobites" led by none other than pinhead.
the movie has frank cotton's niece find and open the box, quite by mistake, and she finds herself confronted by the dark angels of pain/pleasure.
this scene still makes my hair stand on end.....
