F1: Sergio Perez's crash at 270km/h during Monaco qualifying

Saturday's qualifying session for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix was overshadowed by a serious crash involving the Sauber driver Sergio Pérez.

The track was silenced for 38 minutes while medics treated the Mexican driver whose car was eventually winched clear of the track.

Pérez came out of the tunnel on the wrong side of the track and veered to the right, where he hit the barrier. The car then slewed over the chicane before hitting a tyre barrier.

The first sign that he was OK came when the section of the crowd applauded, suggesting that he had seen movement from Pérez. A few minutes later it was confirmed that the driver was conscious and speaking. [Guardian]
