A Couple Observations on Posting.

I like a broad range of stuff, and I like to be true to the things I like, however, the sift doesn’t always allow for that. The sifts I find come in two varieties:
1). Things I like a lot and mean something to me personally, whether through historical influence on my life or because it just fits with my ideals.
2). Things that will sift, and will gain me lots-o-points!

Now, I’ve found I am often rocked between the two. I like certain things, and the things I like all fit into a certain dichotomy of my life. Since I started posting, I’ve found stuff or gone looking for things that I really never took the time to explore on the internet …things that pertained to me; personal stuff, like ideas that helped define me as I grew up. Videos that I would place high on my list and give an instant vote if I saw them come from someone else.

The conundrum hits me when I start to consider what gets the votes.

The flipside to personally interesting stuff, are often fluff comedy or epiphanies of shock value (like MythBusters blowing up a car – cool but in the end, fluff.) We like to get sifted, We like to climb the ranks and the carrots that dangle in front of us in the form of star power keep us looking for that almighty PowerVideo that will bring us into the mighty ‘top 15’ or better yet, ‘number one’ place, rocketing our status in front of our peers and climbing the ladder of success.

I do see certain people in here being true to themselves and sifting for the love of what they sift but their pqueue’s are ripe with unsifted videos which appeal to a select few, forever languishing in inactivity. I myself, find myself discarding some of what I felt, were my best finds (though some were crap). No votes means I might as well discard, right?

Our jobs here seem to be to find the Gems out there, compile them for everyone to judge and toss out the irrelevant. But in the end, it isn’t always weather the videos we find are good, It’s weather the videos we find “get seen by the right people”. And that isn’t always so easy. We have to peak people’s interest first, almost trick them into watching. My recent posts on Billy Idol may not sift – but they deserve to.

The sift is “Fickle!” So in the end, do we discard or hold onto those Pqueued Gems?
Do we sacrifice our good posts to make room for the “Fluff?”
Do we stay true to ourselves and bypass the fluff posts?
Do we whore ourselves out and sift the fluff just so we can get points?
What do you do?
What will you do?
