Just Another Day In The Snake Room

Babymech says...

I don't even... are they using an iPhone as their security camera? Or do they have a normal security camera but somewhere in the process the video got vertically letterboxed? This video is a mystery.

Also, snakes appear to be idiots. Just take the food!

Santa Ana Cops Behaving Badly

newtboy says...

I'm waiting for all the videos of the 'good cops' out there...I've been waiting a LONG time now. It's seeming more and more like they don't exist anymore.
It's really telling how cops act around other cops when they think no one's watching. it does not go unnoticed how they NEVER worry that the other cops will turn them in for their criminal actions.
Every day my estimation of cops gets worse and worse, with good reason. Incredibly sadly, I'm NEVER given a reason to even question that rapidly sinking, already near rock bottom estimation.
If ANY other group of people committed the acts the police have committed just this year alone, the organization would be outlawed and it's assets seized under RICO.

Let this be a lesson to us all, hide your security cameras well so you have evidence against whatever false charges might be levied against you, because the police know to destroy the visible one's before robbing you blind.

Instant Karma

newtboy says...

Really?!? To you and @Magicpants...exactly what should they have done that they did not to de-escalate the situation. Turn off all cameras because baby asshole doesn't want to be filmed? You do know that 1)there was more than one person filming him and 2)there are also security cameras everywhere, so he's on camera anyway.
Numerous people tried talking him down, with no luck. When someone is going nuts and threatening you, recording them IS the right thing to do...always. If they're the kind of infant bully that goes ballistic because their inappropriate behavior is caught on tape, that's 100% on the infant, not the people calmly and silently filming his outbursts, not on the people that try to stop him from beating up an elderly man. Just WOW!
It's simple to tell who started it, it's the one who's going insane about being filmed, and he's being filmed because he's already been going insane. He would NOT have been being filmed by numerous random strangers if he wasn't already causing a drunken scene.
Dude's an asshole, a baby, a homophobe, racist, batterer, and an idiot...yet some here seem to be on his side. Hmmmmm. Let's think about that one.

sillma said:

Oh yes, I fully agree with you there, no need to escalate the situation as far as they let it go, and indeed impossible to tell what started the whole debacle in the first place.

My guess is bit of unjustified holier than thou attitude, which seems to be the curse of the current day and age, from the unimpaired audience. There's no justification for belligerent drunken behaviour, but neither is there for not doing anything about it until it is too late when there seems to be time and chance to de-escalate the situation by more peaceful means.

But, alas, it's all just guesses with the information available.

Runaway Saw Blade

lucky760 says...

Ah, so you admit there's another option than just crying: leaving a note.

I guess you didn't get the full details of the events that transpired. The prick just fetched the blade and took off.

He didn't leave a note.

The only reason the residents there knew what happened was their exterior security camera footage.

There is no special procedure in these matters.
You just leave a note, and then go about your business.
They will contact you whenever they return to the damaged property, you exchange insurance info, and deal with it.
Nothing else to it. No rituals. No special calls or reports. No authorities to inform. It's between you and the property owner.
And unless you have some reason to believe that they will return any moment, waiting around for them to do so is pointless. So yeah, you leave.

I believe you may be confused by my statement "his insurance will cover it".
The "he" in that statement, was the sub-contractor who's saw flew off.

Car Hits Cyclist and Leaves a Mattress to Cushion the Fall

Dantarios jokingly says...

yeah, becuase it's not possible to record a video on a security camera.

CreamK said:

Yeah, when someone is filming a security monitor and something just happens to happen at the very precise moment.... First question, why was the guy filming it in the first place? Shouldn't those be recorded anyway with better quality. I'm putting this to fake viral ad category.

Mother keeps her cool in the middle of a Detroit car-jacking

sixshot says...

Wait, they had working security cameras over there? Must've been on some privately owned property there. So, with how things are over in Detroit, I guess the cops will catch them in... maybe 1 to 3 years.

Seal Birth at Elliott Bay Marina- Seattle, WA 7/29/13

PlayhousePals says...

Seems it survived unscathed ... I just found this:

Brian Kaloper, harbormaster at Seattle’s Elliott Bay Marina, was walking to his office on Monday morning when something caught his eye.

It was a seal on the marina’s G dock. Given that the dock is heavily traveled, Kaloper thought it was odd to see the animal there.

“When I got into my office, we turned on our security cameras to see what was going on,” he said.

Soon, Kaloper was treated to an astonishing sight. As the camera recorded, the seal gave birth to a pup, alternately laboring and taking a few breaks to rest. Immediately after the pup was born, the mother turned around and nudged its face and body, as if to make sure it was alright, then looked around the dock.

Marina staff quickly locked the door to the gate to protect the mother and baby, put up caution tape and kept the dock closed for a few hours, until the mother and newborn were back in the water. Kaloper said though marina staff are used to seeing wildlife around the facilty, the birth was astonishing to witness.

“Our staff sees plenty of seals and pups swimming about, but to catch nature in its most pure form on camera during a regular Monday was unbelievable,” he said.

Fed Whistleblower's Lawyer's Computers Stolen But Not Money

newtboy says...

On a side note...Why are the security cameras always as low definition as possible? Video like this is useless unless there's someone actually watching it in real time, for identification it sucks big time. In a high rent place like this, you would think they would have decent security cameras, but apparently not.

I know what you are going to say, but before you go any further, I should tell you that this is actually a clip from the hyper-realist documentary entitled "Non-manipulated footage of actual things that happen in the real, actual world."

Oops...I just saw this...

Why am I not being nice to you???

You need to sneak in after everyone has left and take a video and pictures then...I hope they don't have security cameras. I might want to get you fired but I don't want you to die.

ant said:

Hey! Why are you not being nice to me? Do you want me to die?

Fun job? That depends. Do you like sitting on the computer repeating the same process with buggy and broken softwares? Break, wait for fixes, retest, etc. I have seen offices in houses before like my parents' lawyer friends down the hill/street.

Too bad I can't take pictures at work due to tight security reasons.

CNN Sympathizes with High School Rapists

Jerykk says...

When was torture last sanctioned by the state? The dark ages? Of course violent crime was higher in the dark ages. It was pretty difficult to enforce the law back then due to the lack of cars, satellites, computers, security cameras, guns, etc, not to mention that laws varied greatly depending on which part of the land you lived in and what lords you served under. Does Pinker's book have any contemporary examples that support your position?

In any case, regardless of whether you favor punishment or rehabilitation, the real solution is to address the root of the problem: lousy upbringings. Anyone can have children, no matter how qualified they are. They can have a criminal record, a history of mental illness and be unemploymed and still have as many kids as they want. It's ridiculous and the reason why so many children grow up to be criminals. We need to have strictly enforced regulation of reproduction. Parents should have to go through a thorough testing process and meet certain requirements (like having enough money to actually support a family) before being allowed to have kids. If a woman walks into a hospital with an unlicensed pregnancy, both she and the father should be arrested and executed without trial. Legal births would be recorded in an international database, which employers and government workers would reference during any hiring, licensing or authorization process. Essentially, illegal children would have no chance of ever becoming a part of regular society, forcing them to the outskirts and slums. This would make it easier to focus raids and clear out the most prominent concentrations of criminals.

This may sound dystopian but it's really the only way to fix the root of the problem. You will never be able to make people better if you let them be raised under lousy conditions. Morality is learned, not innate. If we want everyone to follow the same rules, they need to be taught to respect them. If the parents don't, why would the children?

ChaosEngine said:

Right, well thankfully we no longer live in the dark ages.

And you're actually wrong about fear. We live in the safest time in history (statistical fact) and we don't use torture as a deterrent, yet when state sanctioned torture was considered a deterrent (which was much of human history) violent crime rates were much higher.

I suggest you read "The better angels of our nature" by Stephen Pinker.
