Hillary Clinton tells huge freaking lie about trip to Bosnia

Tofumar says...

"She recalls being told to move out of an area due to the threat of sniper fire, no sound of bullets, no bodies falling by her side, just "it's not safe to be here, please get to your transport", that does not sound terribly memorable to me, and may have actually happened after the greetings caught on tape."

No. That is somewhat like the account given in her book, where she is told about some sort of generalized threat of sniper fire (before she lands, I think). But a series of recent statements--remember, this "misstatement" has been repeated often in several different contexts--differ markedly. At one point while talking about this she actually insinuated that she had to shield the little girl with her body.

Again, feel free to give her the benefit of the doubt. Even I don't necessarily see this as a "smoking gun," as you put it. But the idea that it's not a substantive criticism--that it's somehow a distraction from real issues--seems bogus to me.

"Remember, we are talking about being shot at by a friggin sniper.

This is not what I hear. She recalls being told to move out of an area due to the threat of sniper fire, no sound of bullets, no bodies falling by her side, just "it's not safe to be here, please get to your transport", that does not sound terribly memorable to me, and may have actually happened after the greetings caught on tape.

I am not asserting that she is unfailingly honest, I think there is ample evidence against such a position. I just don't see this being any sort of smoking gun.

7 Countries considering abandoning the US dollar (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

MINK says...

you said the entire history of the US was an orgasm of violence, i was pointing out that the constitution doesn't say "THOU SHALT KILL!"

man, i think you have a problem understanding that discussions on the internet are fluid, and impersonal. we are not even using our real names, and there's no body language or time continuity.

chill. why should i respond to your exact argument (even if i KNOW your exact argument from reading your mind or something)

roll with it!

if america's history is an orgy of violence, what is britain's? spain's? france's? russia's? etc etc etc.
we all had empires once, even lithuania.

Do We Really Need FCC Censorship? - Penn and Teller

BrightGuy says...

I like Penn and Teller. I think they are both funny and smart. I like B*llSh*t! for the same reasons. But in this case (and in other episodes), They are just plain wrong. The airwaves are a limited public resource. And they are going to get even more limited in 2009 when we lose channels 52 through 69 to private for profit companies. At that point, we will have 49 broadcast channels available in any market for television.

If the FCC were to disappear tomorrow, the following things would happen

#1. More broadcasters would be owned be fewer larger corporations.
#2. local content would disappear
#3. PEG (Public access, Educational and local Government) channels would disappear from cable.
#4. Programs aimed at Educating or Instructing kids would disappear from all channels.
#5. Standards, like NTSC and ATSC would start to balkanize. Look at cable boxes and satellite boxes to see this. You have to run Comcast's cable box, their software, their DVR, their digital package to watch TV.
#6. Cheap products produced somewhere else would start appearing that make no guarantees of safety or that they won't interfere with your TV reception. Because there would be no body to license these devices.
#7. TV ratings would disappear. I got kids and I like that idea that TV content is rated. I wouldn't let my kids watch the Sopranos but I'm happy that it's rated and that I know what to expect. That way, I can avoid it when watching TV with my kids and other people can watch it. That's all good.

There's a place for government. I like the idea that government inspectors are making sure the meat I buy is safe. I like the idea that cops are there to protect and serve me. I like the idea that we have a military to protect us from other countries that want to do us harm.

As for the idea that FCC is currently limited to over the air broadcast, that just isn't accurate. Satellite and cable companies have FCC regulations that they are currently obligated to follow. For instance, "must carry" rules, "basic service tier" requirements, etc.

CH-46 (Chinook) helicopter crashes into ocean

MarineGunrock says...

Well, there's no bodies even visible, and if all the people lived, it wouldn't change anything. It's still a clean video. Also, snuff by the FAQ definition is showing loss of human life for entertainment - Personally, I don't see that this video is different than a regular news clip - it just lets people know that things like this happen.

Sift Was Hacked (Sift Talk Post)

J-Rova says...

The address I use for this site is relatively new; not many people have it because I can't stand spam, and so far so good...haven't gotten a single bit yet. However, I recently received one that was odd... the subject said something about receiving an application for employment or something like that, but there was no body text except for the confidentiality warning, which is usually attached after emails from employers, hospitals, etc. (after that, there was a similar one about the IRS, which I'd never seen before)... both seemed to be a signature on an email which otherwise contained no text. So I looked to see who it was from, and it was from "unknown@unknown.unknown" It's true I've been looking for a few jobs lately, but I don't recall applying at the CIA. So, A) it had me wondering if it was correlated to the security breach here, (ie intruders obtaining email addresses) and/or B) has anyone had a similar experience with gmail, especially with the triple-unknown "From" address?

What motivated the 9/11 hijackers? See testimony most didn't

Farhad2000 says...

"Yes, J.D., Israel does recieve a lot in foreign aid and so does Egypt. If you recall the ringleader and four other hijackers in the 9/11 atacks came from Egypt."

Excuse me?

19 hijackers committed 9/11.
15 were from Saudi Arabia (KSA).
2 were from the U.A.E.
1 was Lebanese.
1 was from Egypt.

No body ever asks why the country from which most of the hijackers came from never gets questioned. Obviously because one doesn't fool around with the oil supply coming to the US from KSA. But either way one can't keep seeking scapegoats for what basically was and is a misguided foreign policy.

The Death of an Embryo

James Roe says...

swampgirl, they throw them out because they have tons of them. When a woman goes to a fertility clinic for whatever reasons they often fertilize many eggs. Storage requires constant exposure to liquid nitrogen so it is often not financially viable. So they end up destroying them because no body wants to pick up the tab, on the right or the left.
