The Iron Giant - Don't Give Up
You need to watch:
- Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind
- Princess Mononoke
Because any list of best animation should include one or both.
Popeye vs. Anime
Man I hate annie-may. What's up with the water pills and squares on their heads? Why are their mouths normal and then go huge? How can people watch this crap, srsly? And what's up with the gay hair? Okay, I actually liked Mononoke and Spirited Away, because they were well drawn, but this regular anime is shit.
PS
Popeye is cool.

You know, I do remember hearing something along those lines, but I haven't ever watched it dubbed. Mononoke-hime is actually possibly my favorite Ghibli (that or Grave of the Fireflies...SO SAD), so I guess I ought to upvote anyway lol.

the English version of "Princess Mononoke" was not a dub, it was rewritten by Neil Gaiman especially for American/English audiences with the supervision of Miyazaki. It had American and British stars and while not at all a different film was much more than a dub. I know because I own both the subtitled original and the reworked English. THe reworking is just as excellent as the original.

I don't vote for dubs as a general rule.

Sexism Strength and Dominance:Masculinity in Disney Films
I didn't like this video and would downvote if I could, simply for the fact that they bring up stereotypical gender roles as something Disney tries to imprint in children (which I actually can agree with to some point).
However, my gripe with the creator of this video is when he shows us the scenes from "Beauty and the Beast" where Gaston shows his worst behaviour. This is what I have a problem with, as Gaston obviously is the bad guy and is clearly depicted as such even to the extent that small children can understand it. His advances also fails quite miserably, and in a humorously manner, which would also reinforce the lesson that acting like a man's man and treating women like objects (which is exactly like he does) is bad, especially when you take into consideration the mutually respecting relationship between Belle and the Beast.
EDIT: And the Mulan bit just made me laugh out loud. She quickly learns that masculinity is primarily defined by strength and physical prowess, does she? Never mind the pathetic try to imply that masculinity equals sexism, does the commenter actually try to say that Mulan somehow teach children to fall into the classical gender roles? Seriously, that's the dumbest thing I've heard this millennium.
The only thing that I can imagine the creator of this video would find completely PC would be 90 minutes of those little ghost creatures from Princess Mononoke. However, we couldn't possibly have the word "princess" in the title as it would subconsciously force all girls watching it into becoming subordinate to boys.
The Evolution of Anime
Obviously anime shows a side of the only culture ever nuked in the world. These people thought they had seen the end of time itself. There is a series of books that chronicles changes in anime and cultural influences in their animated media. First one is called "From Godzilla to Akira" I think. Cant remember the authors name but she did a 2nd book called "From Akira to Princess Mononoke".

SPOILER/Plot details below:
Ashitaka (first shown in the vid),is the last Emishi prince, who saves his village from an assault by a demon. After killing the demon, Ashitaka finds out that the demon was the Boar God Nago suffering under a curse. Having received a demon mark on his right arm during his battle with Nago, Ashitaka is cursed by the Boar God's hatred and pain. However, after consulting the shamanistic wise woman of the village, it is found that a lump of metal was in Nago's corpse, which was likely the source of the curse. Though currently limited to just his arm, the curse will eventually spread throughout Ashitaka's body, and then Ashitaka will die. The curse is a double-edged sword; should Ashitaka experience any rage or hatred, he gains immense strength and fortitude, but the curse will spread faster. Whenever this happens, the curse will manifest itself as writhing purplish-black tendrils floating around the arm, similar to the ones Nago had.
Ashitaka sets out from his home to head to lands to the West, where Nago originated. During his travels, he will seek a cure. In order to do so, the wise woman warns him, he must "see with eyes unclouded by hate." By accepting this mission, Ashitaka also accepts exile from his homeland. He rides out with his steed Yakul, his loyal red elk. Since it was considered taboo to see off one who is banished, only one person dared to say goodbye to Ashitaka: his 'little sister,' Kaya (according to Miyazaki, actually his bride-to-be; calling herself his 'little sister' was a term of affection), who gives him her crystal dagger so that he would not forget her....
San (Princess Mononoke) the 17-year-old princess of spirits and beasts. When San was a baby, her parents, along with some other travelers, were attacked by the wolf goddess Moro. Her parents threw San to Moro as a sacrifice to save their own lives, thus escaping while Moro was preoccupied with San.
However, San was spared; Moro did not eat her, instead raising San as her own daughter. San treats Moro as her mother and her two natural pups as brothers. San rejects her own humanity, thinking of herself as a wolf. It could be possible that because of her past, San hates humans with a great ferocity, even more so than Moro.
San cares very much for the forest she lives in and the animals she lives with. While Moro may be known as the Queen of Beasts, San is known as the Princess of Beasts. San is very agile, able to dodge arrows, darts, and even ishibiya shots. She, like the Mountain Spirits, wants to destroy the humans so that they will stop taking away all their land.

My Neighbour Totoro - classic Japanese anime - cute as hell!
Miyazaki is a genius! One of my favorite movies of all time is Princess Mononoke
Gigantor
Actually Daphne you are mistaken, the background of Grave of the Fireflies is more tragic in reality, the anime is an adaptation of the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Akiyuki Nosaka, intended as a personal apology to the author's own sister. And was written and directed by Isao Takahata for Studio Ghilbi. Hayao Miyazaki wasn't directly involved in this, something I could clearly make out as he would never make a story that's this tragic.
Hayao Miyazaki is the Hans Christian Anderson of the animated medium. When I first discovered his films, not only was I blown away by their plot lines and quality but the sheer number of them... Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle...
If you liked Grave of the Fireflies I would highly reccomend, Pom Poko by Isao Takahata.
By the way I watched Grave of the Fireflies only once in my life. But it's effect was so deep that I cannot bear to watch it again anytime soon.
