Bill Nye makes fun of Neil deGrasse Tyson's reply to Dawkins

Duncan says...

In saying that it's possible the 'answer of consciousness' could come from somewhere completely unexpected, or unrelated, to what people are thinking now. Like the example he gave where it took something completely new (General Relativity) to explain Mercury.

It seemed pretty self-explanatory in the video.

Why is Tyson correct? What's the line of reasoning?

Bloodborne gameplay trailer -Hidetaka Miyazaki's new game

artician says...

So, basically, the next Dark Souls.

Which is fine, because I enjoy those games. Character and enemy designs look great, but at this point they're just regurgitating a formula. It looks foreboding, it's probably going to be brutally difficult, there will be some interesting monsters and probably a convoluted, western-style dark fantasy plot. That's the same thing that Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 offered to a 'T'.
Someone no one else has ever agreed with me from the game industry is personal reinvention, and I wish consumer demand was more fickle for less repetitive offerings.
I *might* play this, but after 3 games, multiple playthroughs of each (because I loved them so much), I'm pretty much over it. Plus, fuck next gen consoles, I could have gotten another 5 years from the current crop. I expect truly talented developers to innovate when they're lauded for their perceived innovation from past successes. Tackling an entirely different genre in the same way the *Souls games were throwbacks to more unforgiving times, or taking the extremes from the previous entries to completely unexpected heights.
There are so many fucking vectors of unexplored progress in the medium that it never surprises me when industry reports year-over-year declines for half a decade, and infuriates me to the point that I wish it would all just fucking die already, wipe out the failures, and rebuild it with this millenniums version of the NES. It's not even about finding "completely new, unexplored methods of interactive media", because you can continue to build on the genre's that exist with a 4-decade-old toolbox that an entire industry only recognizes the most recently opened drawer of.

A Powerful Short Film in Six Lines and Three Minutes

Perfect first comment. I already had wetness in the eyes from the film, and then that completely unexpected comment had me throw my head back and literally wheeze-laugh out loud, turning the tears into the laughter variety.

G20 Toronto Black Block get green light to rampage?

bcglorf says...

That is the whole point, they didn't engage the black bloc, but they did attack reporters and arrested peaceful protestors.

You don't think that's oversimplifying things a touch?

You've got the police lines on one side, the bloc block rampaging on the other, and a sea of protesters in the middle. The truth couldn't be that the few city police there were available to pursue the black bloc earlier were just inadequate and late? The truth couldn't be that the black bloc dispersed into the protesters before the city police could respond. It couldn't be that the black bloc fully planned on the police responding to their actions and intended to do their damage and then hide before the police response?

And yes, it is some kinda of crazy, because it was completely unexpected from Canadian government!

Oh right, now it makes sense. This is EXACTLY what the government wanted all along. The entire mess with the black bloc plays right into their hands. The only thing standing in Harper's way was finding someway to sway public opinion against himself and his government.

Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry Debate Catholics

PostalBlowfish says...

I think that people weigh child rape and charity and find that child rape is more destructive than charity is constructive. Those seem to be the relevant present day concerns raised.

Look at that audience response. That was incredible and completely unexpected for me.

Victim Blame - Rationalizing The Opposition To Healthcare

There is a certain wisdom in people being the victims of their own bad choices, though at times, it is an oversimplification of a much larger set of problems.

I am a big proponent of responsibility and accountability for individual actions so I can agree to a point. However, I can't fully agree. We all make mistakes. And beyond those mistakes, sometimes things just go wrong due to freak circumstances and/or things completely unexpected. That isn't even counting the background that we come from. One of my friends is extremely smart and went to a prestigious college. Her parents were upper middle class, but wouldn't pay for any college. Since she was under 25, she couldn't get financial aid (college rules state that she is a dependent of her parents whether they are paying or not.) She ended up with over $100,000 in loans by the time she graduated. Having that large loan forced her hand in deciding her career and what she will do in life for a while. Now albeit this is only a small (although not to her) specific example, this difference in background exists across the board to widely varying ranges. All of that combined makes me want to give people the benefit of the doubt and many second chances. How has this worked out? Well quite frankly, I've been ripped off and taken advantage by people in the past. I'm sure it will happen again, but I've learned to judge people's character quite well now due to my experiences and am more mindful of what type and degree of the help I give. Looking back, I wouldn't have done anything different.

Here's a wonderful sift on success and failure. I don't know if you have watched it yet. I didn't see a vote by you for it, so maybe you haven't.

There are real problems of poverty and hardship that you can do something about...like right now...this very moment. You don't need an act of congress to do so.

I agree on a personal level and do some things that address those issues, but I am unconvinced of the argument that private charity, etc can take care of a sufficient amount of the ills. Please understand I am not implying that you are making that argument, but it is that belief that doesn't allow me to say that the government shouldn't be involved at a medium or higher level.

[pulls speech from tux]

Thanks KP and everyone for the lovely pictures. I haven’t actually worn a tux since my prom. It had a plum cumberbun and matched my girlfriend’s hand sewn dress. (Theme: Heaven. Theme song: Bryan Adams –Heaven)

That reminds me, A few weeks before the prom we went out and “parked” at Lion’s Park behind the loop road (you know the place) and cops came and shone flashlights on us until we dressed and drove away.

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes – the prom. We didn’t rent a limo, I drove my 1984 clapped out Ford Tempo. It was a pretty sweet ride – but looked out of place pulling up into the hotel where the dance was actually held. The valet kind of sneered at me as he took the keys. I don’t remember much about the rest of the night …

All those moments – not that they were great moments - are gone. But at least every single thing I’ve ever said on VideoSift is here forever. (you were wondering how I’d bring it around, right? Bam! Toastmasters, baby!) Outside of my fab family – videosift is my raison d'être, and I vow to you that it will never die. (unless we run out of money)

So thanks to everyone who continues to make this community flourish, grow and feed my enormous ego. Thanks also to my compatriot Lucky and my tolerant family.
